What game should I get next?
« on: May 11, 2006, 06:54:05 PM »
I've been enjoying my modded DUO-R from D-Lite lately, and I'm interested in expanding my fairly meager PC Engine collection.

These are the games I have:
PC Genjin 2 (Bonk's Revenge)
Veigues Tactical Gladiator (not a great game, but I liked it as a kid)
Winds (Lords) of Thunder
Gate of Thunder
Dracula X
Tengai Makyou II
Tengai Makyou: Kabuki-den (D-Lite gave these two Tengai games to me with the system, awesome choices!)
Doukyuusei
Tenchi Muyo

These are the games I'm interested in:

HuCards:
PC Denjin
Bloody Wolf
Jigoku Meguri
Jackie Chan
Kyuukyoku Tiger [Heli]
Momotaro Katsugeki
Parodius Da!
Raiden
Soldier Blade
Super Star Soldier
Coryoon

CDs:
Macross 2036
Nadia
Gradius II
Shubibinman 3
Legend of Xanadu II
Wonder Boy III Monster Lair
Nexor
Snatcher
Star Parodier
Super Raiden
Spriggan
Valis I, II, III, IV
Yawara
Ys I&II, III
Zero Wing

Any recommendations for additions/subtractions to my list?  Any which I should get first?  Does it matter if I play the Valis games out of order?  I pretty much only play Japanese games, but I was thinking about getting Darkwing Duck for the TG, but I don't know if it's worth getting.

Those are all great games, so go for broke :D .

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Get Darkwing Duck, if it's cheap, since it's a cheaply made game.

Here's what I can recomend:

PC Denjin-beautifully funny shooter
Bloody Wolf-one of my all time favorite games
Jackie Chan-great game, but, too hard for my taste, still great though
Parodius Da!-same comment as PC Denjin
Raiden-a good shooter that's too hard
Soldier Blade-wonderful shooter
Super Star Soldier-ditto
Coryoon-same as PC Denjin....& made by the same design team IIRC

CDs:
Macross 2036-great game
Gradius II-near perfect port
Shubibinman 3-great game, that is sometimes overated, sometimes under
Legend of Xanadu II-beautiful game, one of my fav's
Wonder Boy III Monster Lair-great game
Nexor-cool, but waaaay hard IMO
Snatcher-great game
Star Parodier-awesome game, love it!
Super Raiden-better then Hucard version, for the music, & extra levels
Spriggan-one of my my favorite shooters EVER
Valis I, II, III, IV-great series, they're all good
Ys I&II, III-my favorite game series EVER!
Zero Wing-good shooter, seems like it's missing a few things from the arcade version

Oh, & if you end up liking Bloody Wolf, I think you'll also enjoy Last Alert, I love that game, horrible voice acting & all!  Tight game, I wanna do a sequal to it some day!  Next Alert, or maybe Previous Alert, & I'm not joking!

To conserve space, I commented within the quote.

These are the games I'm interested in:

HuCards:
PC Denjin -- If you like horizontal cute-em-ups, definitely!
Bloody Wolf -- Some flicker / slow -down can't ruin this great game.
Jigoku Meguri - ? Don't recall this off the top of my head ?
Jackie Chan -- Not a "wow!" game, but very solid, fun platformer.
Kyuukyoku Tiger [Heli] -- Perhaps only fans of old-skool shooters can appreciate how much fun this game is. I love it.
Momotaro Katsugeki -- I have yet to play it. It's sitting in the closet.
Parodius Da! -- Excellent, but if you've played other Parodius games, you might want to get a PCE exclusive game first.
Raiden -- ditto
Soldier Blade -- Fun vertical shooter. Many consider it (slightly) better than Super Star Soldier.
Super Star Soldier -- I really liked this game. If you really like vertical shooters, then you won't mind having both SB and SSS. Otherwise, these games are very similar and you should choose one for now.
Coryoon -- If you like cute-em-ups like PC Denjin, then you must get this game as well. Unfortunately, I think it is pretty expensive.

CDs:
Macross 2036 -- Fun horizontal shooter, but not as amazing as some folks may lead you to believe.
Nadia -- I have yet to play it.
Gradius II -- If you love old-skool Gradius, then this is a must-have. Hard as balls, but worth the masochism!
Shubibinman 3 -- I've never been a huge fan of this game, but lots of folks love it.
Legend of Xanadu II -- Never played it.
Wonder Boy III Monster Lair -- One of my favorite games of all time. HOWEVER, this will only appeal to folks who like forced-scrolling platforming + shooting. It's NOT a "run-n-gun" -- it's a platformer like Wonderboy 1 / Adventure Island, but with lots of shooting. I know, it's hard to explain. To make WBIII even tougher to pin to a specific genre, the boss fights are 100% horizontal shooter.
Nexor -- Nexzr?
Snatcher -- Never played PCE version.
Star Parodier -- Easy vertical shooter, but tons of fun. Even if you are hardcore shooter fan, you'll have fun with this.
Super Raiden -- Get this instead of the HuCard. The soundtrack rules (very faithful to arcade tunes), plus there are 2 extra stages not found on HuCard. Tough as hell, but great. Search for a thread on this game... I think rolins (?) explained why Super Raiden is so great.
Spriggan -- I think this is a fun game. It's not groundbreaking, but it does everything right and has a wonderful aesthetic (thus elevating it above standard fare).
Valis I, II, III, IV -- I love 'em all. III is my fave.
Yawara
Ys I&II, III -- Get Ys I & II first.
Zero Wing -- I like old-skool shooters, so this is fun, IMO. Most folks wouldn't recommend it, but if you get it cheap it will provide some fun. Only get this if you like old-skool shooters.

Any recommendations for additions/subtractions to my list?  Any which I should get first?  Does it matter if I play the Valis games out of order?  I pretty much only play Japanese games, but I was thinking about getting Darkwing Duck for the TG, but I don't know if it's worth getting.
Darkwing Duck did not impress me. TaleSpin is probably a better game if you're into the Disney licenses. TaleSpin is inexpensive, but I've yet to see DD cheap (not that I look too often)... Neither DD nor TS are highlights of the TG-16, of course, but I'd never stop anyone from being curious about them. I myself recently got TaleSpin just to quench my curiousity.

Don't worry about playing the Valis games out of order... unless you understand Japanese... even then, you'll probably have a blast with the games in any order you play them.

Thanks for all the recommendations.  I guess I'll just see what's available for now.

Oh, and Jigoku Meguri is otherwise known as Hell Explorer, sorry I should've put the translation in too.

If you're into digital comics add Ranma 1/2 to your list just above Nadia and Yawara (in that order).

Ahhh! I just got this game recently, if it's a Namco platformer. I have yet to play it...

Actually, Bonze Adventure, not Bronze

I think I've seen it also translated as Tour of Hell.  I kinda recognized it's Jp name, but, couldn't figure it out

Got Valis I and III off the same seller on Yahoo Jp for a total of 1300 yen, and Wonder Boy III Monster Lair from another seller for 500 yen.  W00t~

I looked around for the other Valis games-- II seems to go for a bit more, and I haven't seen IV at all...  Ah well, I got enough to keep me busy for a while, not to mention the pile of freelance work I gotta finish...

For some reason, Valis IV always seems to be a bit more $$$ than the other PCE installments... Valis I also seems to be a bit more as well. I don't know if it is relevant, but PCE Valis I and IV were Japan-only and released chapters II and III...

As for WB III -- the music, in general, kicks ass! The music really helps you "get into the zone" for each stage (well, for me anyway). Two-player co-op is really fantastic on this as well (since all the stages are designed with two tiers -- one for each player), but both players need to be really good to get far :)

I'm getting close to 1CC'ing WBIII PCE... but it's a long game and I've spent way too many hours playing it :)

Of the shooters you're interested in, I rated most of them based on difficulty. Hardest on top and easiest on the bottom.

Super Raiden
Raiden
Kyuukyoku Tiger
Super Star Soldier
Nexzr
Gradius II
Parodius Da!
Soldier Blade
Spriggan
Star Parodier
PC Denjin
Coryoon

These last two games I've yet to play.

Macross 2036
Zero Wing

I recommend Super Raiden for anyone up for a real challege, it's not overly expensive and at Japangamestock you can buy them brandnew.
If you already love Raiden then I suggest getting Kyuukyoku Tiger. It's one of those oustanding shooters that's hardly ever on someone's list. After 4 months this one is still on top of my pce play list.

Nexzr, Soldier Blade, Spriggan, and Coryoon have hefty prices under them. Of the four I recommend Nexzr, should be had for $60 off ebay. Others say Soldier Blade would be a better choice, but I choose Nexzr because much more fun to play and it's harder.

Eh? Nexzr is much harder than Super Star Soldier.
