It came from the Desert --- Playback issues ---> [SOLVED!]
« on: April 27, 2014, 11:10:03 PM »
Been playing around with lately and found out that I completely had to readjust my drive in order for it to play back the FMVs  *mostly* without issues.

There are points in the game however, where I can hear an unusual noise (read error, I´ve grown to hate that sound...) and then the game just stops. Usually this happens ie before or during the "motorcycle" scene, where you drive down the road and listen to coolman. And it is always with the same scenes! When I look at the CD there are no scratches whatsoever at the portion where the laser gave up, either before or after.

Some other issue: all videos befor play fine, and then one would start out fine and suddenly freeze in the middle of it because of a read error (usually accompanied with a brief screeching sound from the speakers).

CD is fine, minor scratches (2-3, nothing to worry about though cause not deep or serious).

I ***reallyreallyreally*** adjusted the hell out of the drive (new caps, new laser with now 100+ hours of gameplay) and this is the max I can get (though way better than before). All other games would load fine before and after the new adjustment.

Is there someone with a fix to this, has experienced this him/herself, or do I have to live with that?

Maybe your disc is somehow effed up.  Have you tried making a cdr copy of the game and seeing if it plays the same way?

No, not yet. I thought I might find the sweet spot for the adjustments first on a "good" copy  :-k

When I look at the disc, it looks great, no lighter or darker parts on the underside, no dangerous scratches - only lightly "used". And definitely no scratches on the layer side...

I blame FEKA for the disc problems.

My memory is crap, but I know I was talking with one of the modders not too long ago and their stress test was It Came from the Desert.  After doing a cap swap or other major surgery, the system was good to go if they could play ICftD for 45+ minutes.  That led me to believe that game in particular is pretty hard on the system.

If everything fails you can at least hear the main theme Sea of Love on your CD Music Player of preference. :)

I'd imagine it's pretty hard for the console because of the data streaming it has to do to load animations... with syscard 2 it only increases the load...

I guess you´re right. It looks like I have sort of a tracking problem that I never can fix no matter what adjustment (and how tiny ever increments are) I do. The nearest I can get is to "almost" get  good video playback with some sound issues. At some point the video sooner or later would deliver somewhat distorted sound and play more or less trough the clip, sometimes it just stops when the error is too big.

Looks like I can´t really get a sweet spot on my drive, this is the max I can get out of it.

Sometimes when all else fails with adjustments a lens rail re-greasing is in order. Especially after replacing the lens. get some white lithium grease spray and give it a go. I apply it using a q-tip as to not get spray all over the inside of the drive.

Thanks, but I´ve done that 2 weeks ago. I am beginning to think that it might be the spindle motor that is causing the issue. As thesteve pointed out some time ago FMVs tend to finish early when there´s a speed issue in reading them...so I think I´ll go after that. Maybe it helps.

As it turned to today, it WAS a spindle motor issue. I replaced it with a new one and suddenly adjusting the drive to correct speed/tracking/focus was an issue of a few mins

CDRs no matter at what speed or program they´ve been burned will be read ALMOST as instantly as orginals! ICFTD runs without troubles, no sound issues do to speed problems anymore. Drive runs much much quiter now. Even my badly scratched Loom "only" takes around 30~ secs to load, before it was min 40s to 1 min!

I recommend to everyone to replace the motor as soon as you have a hard time setting up your drive. Its very likely the the motor has bad bushings or is generally worn out. Mine had a vertical AND a horizontal wobble, which meant that I had very very little room to play with in adjustments and generally was more prone to reading errors, even with the new laser.
