Replacement Gear Drop in style
« on: May 08, 2014, 03:50:47 PM »
Hey everyone,

I have access to a drop in gear for our cd rom units. (The same ones on Feebay) but for a cheaper price. I am looking to see interest before I go ahead on an order of 20 units of gears. The guy on Feebay is selling them for $24.94 + $9.17 for a grand total of $34.11 + wait time for shipping.

What I want to know is if people here would be interested in the gear at $25 - $30 shipped in the US. I want to let them go for $25 shipped, but I would be taking a huge hit buying a large quantity if I can't sell them. I can also make drive repairs as well, but I do not want to step on the folks here who already do it. So if there be interest please let me know.  Also to the repair guys on here: If your looking for the middle gears for repairs I would be willing to work out some killer deals for you guys also.

I would love to hear the community thoughts and suggestions.

Obviously you too missed the point. I have access to the same gears at a better price. I don't give a shit who bought what and when. I am asking about now, does anyone need any now or the foreseeable future. God I hate text, it shows no emotion no voice affliction. If not that's no big deal either I was just trying to offer the same thing at a better price with no wait shipping.

and i did read everything first :-) I even messages them to see if they did in fact get theirs yet

I originally posted the link you had already saw. It was aimed at me, I must read everything before posting, read everything before posting. I have a self-deprecating sense of humor.

Not everyone is attacking, I was trying to be helpful but failed.

I've got one of the ebay gears on its way to me now.  When I get it, I'm going to try casting copies in resin.  If they work well, I should be able to make them available for around $5 each shipped

That would be cool, but resin breaks down pretty easy, at least in my experience. Good luck to you and please keep us updated on any progress.

Yea, I thought of that.  I've got a couple different materials to test, though.  I'm anxious to see how well they hold up.
I've also been wondering how well a 3D printed gear do.  It should be simple enough to model, and as small as they are, pretty cheap to have printed.

The problem with 3d printed is, unless you have a high end one with a small head they will never get close enough to the molded ones. I have seen a few 3d printers in action and the final products and some are really rough looking. There is a method to smooth out the plastic but it involves solvents and timing and would be much more trouble than the worth. The printers are iirc only able to use two types of plastic, PLA that is water soluble, and ABS that's a bit more durable and harder to work with in terms of precision. Not to mention having the right extrude head to start with, I believe the guys over at Atherbyte are having or have had a bit of troubles with the printer they have with getting it all lined up to print their Huey's.

Yea, any FDM type of printer is going to have nowhere near the resolution to print a gear that small.  I have a Makerbot, so I have a good idea of their limitations.
I'm talking about sending it off to Shapeways.  I've seen some extremely impressive work come from them.
