(5/22/2014 - 5/28/2014) Game of the Week: JJ and Jeff

May 22 - May 28: JJ and Jeff
---------------------------------------------------

(Chosen by geise)

Sorry I'm late, guys. The ladies have been keeping me busy.

Anyway, JJ and Jeff is a decent and approachable little action-platformer. The raunchier Japanese version made something of an impact, too. That game, Kato-chan to Ken-chan, registers with just about any 30-something Japanese male I've talked to. If you've got an Everdrive, now is a great time to do a little comparison.

This is a game that truly divides folks into two camps. Haters and luvvahs.

MY HISTORY WITH ZHEY ZHEY: Back when it was released, I was disappointed by it (I wanted it to be more "impressive" and "next gen"...I felt it was a mediocre title overall: decent platforming but it was hackneyed, stale and old). When I beat this damn game, it felt good because it gets quite tricky and challenging in the later stages.

EUREKA MOMENT: I got back into video games in the late 90's. I realized that since a new Wonderboy1/Adventure Island NES was never going to be released, I should appreciate JJ & Jeff as the bastard child it is.

EXPLORATION (greatly increases replay ability): I love that this game requires extensive exploration (trial and error) to find keys and secrets. You need to spend time with this game and get to know it intimately.

SKIDDING/SPRAY ATTACK: I know some folks don't like the sliding/skidding AND/or spray/fart attack, but I think both elements are a nice extension on the core Wonderboy1 mechanics.

SKIDDING: It adds a nice challenge to basic platforming. It bolsters the system of "consequences" to brazenly aggressive strategies (run full speed through the entire stage!). I love running full-speed, but leaping is more precarious now.

I may not convince you that skidding is a worthwhile addition, but surely you will see that spray attack is worthy. I love having the optional attack.  PLUS, via experimentation, you will discover that certain "invulnerable" enemies  (Nessy!) can be vanquished. This certainly adds to the core Wonderboy1 formula. It's easy to pull off a spray attack, too, and can be used effectively at many moments.

HOPPING/BOUNCING: I love hopping on shit to see how long I can stay airborne. Waves of flies, deadly falling objects in trees, etc. provide many, many opportunities to keep hopping. I love twisting and turning JJ in mid-air, in mid-leap as I attempt to find a place to land.

BOTTOM LINE: Take an archetype of platforming (Wonderboy1) and put it on steroids (skidding, hopping on objects) to exaggerate physics and create uber-platforming. For depth: must find keys and "solve" path to boss stage.

I'll stop now.

If it weren't for Yo Bro!, this game would draw all of my Turbo-ire. Gunboat is a better game.
Hey, you.

I still need to try Gunboat!  Yo' Bro! (forgot the ', man) didn't strike me as too terrible, but it is far from my favorite.  I agree with you on several things, Mr. Kobold, but I think you might have just endorsed JJ & Jeff for me. ( :
. Trust me Nully..... You DONT need to try Gunboat!!!! Don't do it!!! You will never be able to reclaim those minutes of your life! :)

No to Gunboat? More like YES! YESSSS!!!

EDIT: Wasn't that an ad praising Night Creatures, Gunboat and Ballistix all in the same page? Proof that they're the holy trinity of the Turbo!

I just love the music in JJ & Jeff.

JJ and Jeff never clicked with me.  It's been a part of my library a couple of times in the past but I always found it frustrating.  Maybe I'll give it another go this week, but my apologies if I don't get around to it...  I had a blast last week playing Galaga '90, though!

JJ & Jeff is a good game.  It's a fun, simple Hudson-style platformer, and helped set the standard for ... well, all of Hudson's platformers for the generation, pretty much.  But for 1987, JJ & Jeff / Kato & Ken is good!  It's simple, but has plenty of secrets to find and is definitely quite hard.  The slippery controls are a little annoying sometimes, but still, it's definitely a fun game.

I will always love this game!  I might not have time to give it a go, but I'll try.  To anyone that doesn't own this game or an everdrive/flashcart you can dl the Super HuCard cd image and play it off of that.

Ok, started playing on my Note 3 thanks to my handy iMpulse bluetoof controller and have three thoughts.

1. It is fun, and i like all the poop in it.
2. The controls aren't horrible, but i find it difficult to kick moving things and take damage and die from stuff i never even see.
3. The 'low life' warning beep that occurs after you take even a few hits may be annoying enough to make me not play this game much longer... at least not without muting it.

yes, i only posted the pic and brag about the mobile emu setup because i have no life and like to show off.

Play on real hardware or GTFO.

it's fine to play around with tiny emu, but you can't fairly judge a game that way.

If course, you might end up hating the game when you play for real!

Now, send that mini-controller to ME!
