which has the better port?
« on: June 14, 2014, 07:44:42 AM »
I know there is a thread compairing mostly Genesis and the few SNES games that saw ports to  games on the TG-16/Duo and PC-Engine.

But lts comapir which games was the better port of the game itself. Be it an arcade port or as an original gamr.

Maybe it's the only port thats affordable. Or maybe you have memories playing it over the other verson. Levels where added or graphics improved.

You tell the tale.

I have thoight of this largly in part because of Truxton/Tetsujin.

Affordability should not be part of any comparison. They didn't port over any price tags.

Tatsujin: PCE has better and more arcade faithful visuals and music than the MD version. The music could/should be much better in both ports. The side bar squish in the MD version doesn't provide the arcade play space, it's just another different experience.

I wish more of these comparisons would also do the 16 bit computers and 8 bit games. SNES/Genesis/PCE is everywhere, but everyone ignores the CPC and Amiga.

Because they're not consoles and they were either not released at all in North America, or if they were few people experienced them, most of those games didn't come out over here and they're pretty much all not real ports and were just made by one or two guys based on camcorder footage of an arcade down the street and they don't even try to recreate the music.

Combine that with the fact that most of those old European computer games aren't on a "comparable" level tech-wise and it makes it pointless for most people, because every aspect is contrasting, while 16-bit console games and the occasional 8 or 32-bit version have comparable aspects.

But if you happen to have enough interest in comparing them, you're free to do so.

Retro Gamer magazine was a professional publication and it usually left out random console versions in it's wide ranging comparisons. When it did mention console games, their impressions were often misleading.

So far for me I have only played chili chili boys and monster lair on the genesis.  Well as for street fighter who HASN'T played that game in at lest one form or another.

So my ability to compair thee games to the PCE port is lacking...at best I have been able to look at footage and pictures but that doesn't really let you see how it feels to play it.

I found that the genesis had Wonderfull ports. Great sprit work loads of color and just enough of an arcad like feel that made these feel like stand out Genesis games.

Now while I do have the super cd port of monster lair Ipmy turbo cd and duo are a but on the fritz lately so I have yet to give it the old college try.

That doesn't really matter much in this day and age when a PCE game might be just as hard to track down as an Amiga game.

I started, but since I'm not as familiar with Amiga and CPC titles as my Eurobrethren, seems like I might not be the best candidate.

there you will be suprised how much better it does look on the PCE once you have played both.

monster lair looks like a cheap euro home computer port compared to the PCE version, which is, beside lacking the parallax scrolling, almost faithful to the arcade (in every term). and even surpases that one with much crispier red book BGMs.

chiki has tons of more details and rarely uses cheap clipped tiles or BGs due to data limitation. also the sprites are mostly bigger and straightly take over from the arcade version, whilst on the MD everything is redrawn.

That still doesn't spontaneously create interest in non-console platforms that people are not familiar with.

It also doesn't change the fact that they are often more new versions and not "ports". As different as they are for content though, a proper "comparison" involving most of those computers would be all contrasting points such as:

CPC version features far worse graphics, including few colors and shades, low and often missing detail of completely redrawn artwork, choppy scrolling, sluggish movement of all of the much smaller sprites all inside of a windowed play area. A couple bgm tracks are recognizable, but there is no in-game music and sound effects are sparse. Intros, endings and between stage cinematics are missing.

SNES version has an extra layer of parallax on the fourth stage, music isn't as good as Genesis and PCE CD versions.

Genesis version has less variety of color, the best music and an extra stage.

PCE CD version looks the same as the SNES and Genesis versions, except that much of the parallax is missing, the CD soundtrack is the highest sound quality and it has all new cnemas throughout the game.
