Ridiculous. I'm not denying that some people may become addicted to games, but the alarmist tripe being spewed in that article is just designed to grab attention (and most importantly money). Particularly the comments from Keith Bakker. His position as director of "Smith and Jones Addiction Consultants" is a dead giveaway as to what his game is (no pun intended). Of course he'd like to sell the idea of gaming being a dangerous addiction!

The author of the article should be ashamed of herself as well. What a poorly researched and inflammatory piece of garbage. It's an AP article though, so what do you expect? (As you can tell I have an extraordinarily low opinion of "journalism" and media hacks in general)

I think there is some truth to video game addiction. Hell I was once addicted to playing Counter-Strike when I was in high-school upwards to my first year in college. I used to play 10 hours straight everyday and I once played for 18 hours straight on a weekend. For 4 years straight. I mean I never left home and I only left my PC to snack, drink, or piss when I'm waiting to respawn in the game. I also regret refusing invitations to parties just so I could stay home to play more CS.

I wasn't able to break this habit until I moved out of my parents home into an apartment, so I could be near my college campus. Stinks when you're on your own cause I couldn't afford the DSL/cable, I tried playing CS on dial-up but the players there always banned me for lagging. So I quit, no point in playing I thought. Well, grades shot back up b/c I was more energetic and I could concentrate in class now that I got 8 hours of sleep. I hang-out with my friends more often and I exercise now and then ( actually I dont, I just don't have a car so I walk everywhere).

Having a clinic to detox people for this kind of problem doesn't seem harmful. I'm all for it. My only concern is whatever research they're doing better not think video games = violent people, which I think is stupid and there no evidence to support that.

This reminds of a episode I recorded of this show called "Intervention", which had this guy suffering video game addiction as well. It was hilarious and the rehab he went to didn't even help him really.

I thought these video game rehab clinics were just one big f*cking joke! Hell, even Nintendo did their own commercials dealing with this. To think that these places are real have just left me speechless!

I play video games most of the time, except when I have to work or deal with family affairs. If these yo-yo's have no will power to break away from the console, then where are their parents to discipline them?

I can't quite remember, I think it must've been a year at the latest. I have it recorded on a VHS somewhere and I could try to upload it to my brother's computer using his video capture card. I'm sure others wouldn't mind seeing something like this

You people are just denying being addicted to video games!

Seriously though. This is not ridiculous at all! This is very serious stuff! There are lots of sick people out there playing video games every waking hour. I know lots of video game addicts who really, really need help.

Video game addicts are just like any other kind of addict -- reluctant to getting help, denying that they are addicted and they get violent or angry when people are trying to help them.

Honestly though, I wish I was addicted to video games currently

. I've been doing much more video game discussion than actual playing lately, though recently I have been playing my new 3DO games and King's Bounty for Genesis. I need to start spending more times on games, myself

I play Wolfenstien Enemy Territores. I will play on just about any XP saver and play for hours at a time,usually all night if I am not talking to anyone on yahoo. I generally always play for the Axis,and I used to go under the name Firefly,cause you know Firefly kicked ass as a member of Cobra,but as of late I found it to work better in my favor to go under the name Anne Frank every time I play. Pissed off Allies play far worse. It just seems sick and funny as hell to see on the screen a bunch of Allies players names who are getting killed by Anne Franks Fire Support.

On maps like oasis and radar maps I can get usually on average 50-90 kills a match. All in all I am hooked on that game,and have been for a long time now.RTCW started it all with its online play,but ET is far better. Addicted,yes,but who f*cking cares. Im going on 29,I am old enough to decide how long I can play whatever game I want to and dont need anyone telling me otherwise.

There are far worse things to worry about then the anti social levels developed by gamers. Going out and getting f*cked up on vodka,acid,meth,ect... on a daily basis,screwing anything that walks without wearing protection because your always horney,sky-diving,playing polo,being a flesh eating zombie,stupid people, these are the true problematic addictions ruining our society and are the very defination of anti-socialist behaviour.

Proof you ask,here you go:
Scary ugly sex addict

Scary ugly meth addict

Scary retarded stupid addict

Scary flesh eating zombie addict

Scary dumb child killer skydiver addict

Scary gay looking polo addict

Im telling you,nobody wants to hang out with these f*ckers. They are the embodiment of anti-social behaviour. Admit you would never be caught dead hanging out by one of these total waste of life losers in public or even in private for that matter depending on who of the above it is.

I have never seen a video game addict look like any of the above,or act like them for that matter.
I know what you going to say,meth addicts hang out in shooting galleries,but be honest with yourself,you think they are there to talk to their friends or visit??? Do flesh eating zombies socialize and use a language that is understandable? No to all the above.

Compared to all the above,give me Enemy Territories any day of the week.

I was a video game addict for a few years but the habit broke on its own; I didn't need some retarded rehab clinic for it. There are certainly people who are extreme in it but I really don't think it's as bad as many make it out to be. In addition, problems don't become major issues until attention is drawn to them...D.A.R.E. anyone?

Don't think i've been ever addicted to a game since, PSO.

Still afther a while i burn out on the game and gave it a rest.

Hard to beleave in europe they need a clinic when.... kids can't put the game down.

Still the most addiction i've seen for video games are online rpgs.

Those can... suck you in then your sleep get's f*ck up and your work,school etc.

Btw any body have that happen to them in wow
