Are both RF shields needed on TG-16?
« on: July 24, 2014, 03:43:12 PM »
I recently region modded my TG-16. Had a couple issues with the mod at first since it's been a while since I soldered anything. Got it working but I'm having trouble getting the system closed with the added wires and circuit board. Could I get away with not putting the shield that goes over the hucard connector? I know the 7805 has to be connected to the bottom shield to spread the heat. I could probably add a small nut or washer to make sure it touches the shield. Would this be ok or should I just cut away some of the top shield to make it fit? Looking forward to some advice so I can get this thing closed up.

Ahh. Guess I should maybe just try and trim it then as the little nook area in my bedroom where I have all my systems hooked up is pretty close to the kitchen and therefore about 15 feet away from the microwave. If I did just leave the bottom though, would that shield it enough?

You can leave the shield off safely, just make sure not to use the console within 500 feet of a microwave oven or any RF transmitter.  Tg16 have been known to induce serious current through the turbo pads in the absence of the FCC mandated RF shielding.

True, but if you add the removed shielding to your microwave's existing enclosure, you can eliminate that problem.

It's best to leave the bottom shield on so the heat for the 7805 regulator has a way to dissipate. It screws into the bottom shielding.

Thanks for all the advice. Think I'll just leave on the bottom shield for now and just be careful with the microwave nearby.

You got me.  :) I know a little about electronics but apparently not enough to not get fooled by that one. Haha.

Only been here a few days and it didn't take me long to figure that out about Nullity, and others for that matter. Still kind of feel dumb for falling for that one though. All in good fun. And I'm enjoying the loony bin. :)

Very good to remember to attach that 7805 regulator back to the shield.  I forgot once and dang that regulator gets HOT, very quickly.  Burned my hand on it.  I'm smart.

Yeah. I didn't have it attached when I was I was confirming that the region mod worked. Started noticing the heat coming from it and turned it off in a hurry.
