Does look pretty, I'll give it that. I never heard good things about these PS2 versions though, and with no working PS2 emulator, I never thought to inspect or otherwise mess with them back when I was focused on fan translation projects.

Yes, Pc-88 was the original.  My mistake.  x68k was about 8 months after.

Actually, PCSX2 is a PS2 emulator that works really good. I tried Ys III on it and it worked fine. You have to make sure you have the right plugins selected but it works nicely. Ys VI - Ark of Napishtim for the PS2 is a terrible port, done by Konami of all people, so I would recommend avoiding it. Taito did a superb job on Ys III so I would definitely give it a try.

Ys 6 port on PS2 is very decent. The PSP port sucks, of course. The PS2 port has spoken dialog for every line of text for characters in the game. I found that pretty impressive, and outside of a couple of dude voice actors that grated on the nerves (one girl in particular; Terra), it added charm to the game. Playing the PC port translated years later, it lost some atmosphere without the voicing. Other than a few minor changes, I wouldn't say the PS2 port is 'terrible'.  Not even close to terrible.

I bought Konami's Ys VI PS2 port for $39.99 when it was released just to support it BITD. Yeah, I surely don't think it was worth that much now, and it is inferior to the PC version, but the main thing at the time was supporting the Ys series (although you may know my predicament when it comes to X.X.XSEED "Games," and not exactly being a cheerleader anymore).

That does strike me as interesting if you feel this Taito port is superb over that version of Ys VI. I'm more inclined to take a look at it some day then. I didn't know that a working PS2 emulator had finally taken off, this PSX2 you mention. That's good to hear.

Yes, the PS2 port is decent. The CG intro is terrible looking and I'm not a fan of the new sprites. I could do without the voices too. I played the original PC version first and loved it so I'm fine without the voices. I was thinking about the PSP port when I said the PS2 version was terrible. The load times on the PSP are terrible and ruin the game.

Sorry, it's actually PCSX2 and it works rather well. Definitely check it out when you can.

Play it from internal memory and it's quite enjoyable.

would a game shark work on playing import PS2 games ona  US PS2?

I ask as I have never bothered to try and play a PS2 import game that wasn't brought to the US.

The only PS2 import games I have ever had interest in was: Ibara (how ever you spell that shoot em up)

FF12 International verson (which I actually do have but never tried, even though it has a english setting)

and possibly this game.

Any other japan only games for the PS2 that might be worth a try that is english friendly?

Word.  If you have custom firmware you can clock the cpu at 333 mhz to help with some of the slowdown.
