Yeah, I think could use an extra sleeve or two, raffle me in, bud!
Hmmmm, I think I want that special, well-regulated power supply, Bernie!! OK, we got a deal on that one!!!! PM sent!!! Those keep the outside power regulated to 10 Volts exactly, so that's easier on the inside regulators.
The cheap, standard power supply that Hudson/NEC supplied is the usual basic set up: a dry transformer, 4 diodes to form a bridge rectifier for AC to DC conversion, a smoothing capacitor across at 10,000 uF, and even a fuse. It's cheap, and in my house when supplied with like 126 VAC, it ouputs 12 DCVolts (when the thing is rated at 10 V). Just means the internal regulators of the Turbo Duo burn off that extra voltage into heat, but that wears 'em down faster.
Ya know, I did actually do a successful 5 V mod on my SNES (it uses a cheap 10 V standard power supply as well) after the internal regulator burned out (could even add a USB port to power it now), but I don't think I would EVER want to try that with my Turbo Duo. Besides, it has two 5 V regulators, one for the motherboard, the other for the CD component, so probably best to leave it as be!
Quick note while on this subject, I would REALLY recommend to people to get rid of that 3 Amp fuse inside your Turbo Duos, add fuse clip holders, and switch to a 1 Amp fuse. A fuse mod is a good idea to protect the motherboard, the ICs/chips really! I think they made a bad decision in using 3 Amp fuses for protection.
