OK, so, I actually kinda like TV Sports Football. It's not like the play control is horrible or anything. I did OK with it. It's no Tecmo Bowl or Madden, but it can be fun.

I actually really like Yo Bro.  I never was able to beat the Ant level, but I always had a blast getting there.

Also, Tale Spin can be a lot of fun.  I've beaten the game many a time.

Deep Blue?  Not a chance.  Gunboat?  Really hard to enjoy.  I remember buying the game as a kid, and the store clerk begged me not to.  Only games they had were that, and the Tennis game.

I also like Yo Bro. At first i didnt like it, but as i played it more i really got into it. Its a pretty cool game, different than most games.

Here's what i think of these games:

Ballistix - got bored of it in 5 mins

China Warrior - looked cool in the commercial, playing it sucks, the movements are weird, it's not proportional, big guy moving around strangely.

Darkwing Duck - crappy gameplay, nice graphics

Deep Blue - this one really sucks lol

Double Dungeons - i played it for 2 mins, nothing but those gray bricks, got bored fast

Drop Off - cool game, i never liked it as a kid, but i like it now

Falcon - i dont like flight simulators, but this one seems extra bad

Gunboat - played it for about 3 seconds and then turned it off

Impossimole - another game with weird movement and difficult to do what u want.

King of Casino - meh

TaleSpin - at first i though it was cool to throw those pine cones, but quickly realized the game was bad, real bad.

Takin' it to the Hoop - This game is awesome and shouldn't be on the list. i loved playing this one for hours

Timeball - i dont like this one much

TV Sports Basketball - i hated it, i tried really hard to get into it but it sucked so i played takin it to the hoop instead.

TV Sports Football - i liked this one, but game is way too easy.

TV Sports Hockey - this one would have been a great game if it wasn't for the zoom feature when u shoot, it disrupts the timing and the fun. But it looked cool. Someone should hack it and remove the zoom.

Yo Bro - as i said, this one isnt bad, the more u play it the better u will think of it.

This is another game I like to defend. I hated Deep Blue the first few times I played it, but then I grew to appreciate the dodge enemies first, shoot second strategy that has to be employed if you hope to get far at all.

And yes, I am also a staunch defender of China Warrior as well.

I knew Deep Blue would have its fans, and I respect that.  You have to admit it's pretty inaccessible, though.  There's so many great shooters for the system and I'm not an ace player by any means so even though I'm dying all over the place, I'm also enjoying the artwork and music and concepts at the same time.  Deep Blue doesn't have a quick pay off in terms of enjoyment that way, it ends up just being an exercise in masochism.  I enjoy working hard for that pay off, but with so many other great games out there I feel my limited time playing these games as an adult is better spent.  I would have beaten back it forth had it been one of my games as a kid, though.  Maybe I'd appreciate it more then.

I can't honestly vote for many of these games that I haven't played.. I know Gunboat and Falcon are both notoriously disliked, but I have never cared for genre they are in so I didn't really play them.   I can't fault the sports games for being what they are, and I wasn't into sports video games that much so I can't count against them either.  China Warrior doesn't seem that horrible to be considered the worst, and it has its outspoken fans, too.  I'd also happily let it live in my collection should I run across one one day for cheap enough.  Double Dungeons as I said previously was a terribly generic game, and I've played a lot of it as it was one of those games I had as a kid and you know how your options were limited back then.  Still, I couldn't say it was the worst.  Just dull or basic.  King of Casino shouldn't even be on this list.  Maybe it's not Vegas Stakes by Hal Labs, but that's another situation where it shouldn't be damned because of genre.  I didn't think it was so bad myself.

I voted for Deep Blue, and Yo Bro only.  Both games marred by frustrating, clunky gameplay, and I just hated the theme of Yo Bro entirely.  You remember the Simpsons episode with Poochie?  I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Bear from Yo Bro had some part in inspiring that.  Deep Blue is a shame though.  That could have been a great underwater themed shooter, and I remember how promising it looked in magazines.. but man, once you play even just the first level and are assaulted with almost impossible to dodge enemies and that horrendous music, you won't want to again.

I think your post was well-written and I followed your logic.

But, as we all know, taste is subjective, so imagine my dismay when I realized that you were throwing Yo, Bro under the goddam bus!

I know the game is flawed (the controls should have been more precise, less sliding on skateboard, more intuitive aiming) but I have long-argued that Yo, Bro is a poor man's Zombies Ate My Neighbors. I think the core formula in both games is close enough to appeal* to fans of ZAMN.

Yes, everyone thinks I'm crazy for promoting Yo, Bro in the same breath as the well-loved ZAMN...I'm setting myself (and others) up for a major disappointment.

I know Yo, Bro is not everyone's cup of tea (it takes a certain tenacity to make it through  the later levels, and when I say "tenacity" I mean "masochism"), but before the game gets brutal, there are many early stages that provide some entertainment.

But I am not the biggest fan of the theme, either. I guess that's one of the things that I've grown to love, but not really. I simply don't find it compelling. How can you mess up skateboarding + California? With a little bit more thoughtfulness, I think skateboarding + California could really have been decent in Yo, Bro, but as it stands, it's just a few notches above a totally generic suburb in Anywhere, USA. Even Paperboy had a more compelling suburb. Maybe Yo, Bro was making an artistic statement about the blandness of suburban America? Or the blandness of the Beach Boys?

Remember, the PSG rendition of Beach Boys tunes was pretty bland. I wish the folks doing the music made the songs bubbling full of energy and more dynamic, instead we got flat Muzak.

With all that said, the inclusion of Beach Boys + skateboarding definitely makes the game seem a bit more inspired...ever so slightly. So, I'd rather have bland Beach Boys than grating carnival music (you folks know what I mean). And I definitely WANT  a skateboarding mechanic, but Yo, Bro implements it poorly. Still, it's not completely broken (debatable, perhaps!).

*You need an open mind and be willing to give a game more than a few minutes. If the internet represents humanity, only five people on our planet qualify to be in this category.

It's not that I mind the underlying core game play in Yo Bro so much.  The thing that turned me off was the combination of a theme I just didn't like along with the squirrelly controls.  Usually, If a game doesn't turn my head, but it gets great reviews, I'll check it out and probably also end up liking it anyway.  I think the controls can make or break a game though, you really don't wanna get frustrated trying to do basic things in it.

I also don't think ICOM really thought hard about the demographic that would be buying this game, either.  I absolutely HATED the Beach Boys when I was younger (still kinda do) and even though I understand it's supposed to convey the CA atmosphere, I just couldn't stand it.  And as you said, it wasn't arranged all that well on PSG to boot.  The cool bear character with the sunglasses, skateboard, and backwards cap was a total miss for me as well.  It just had this stink of "Well, this is what kids like, right?" about it.

So trying not to fall off my skateboard constantly while trying to steer, combined with the overall musical and aesthetic experience is what put me off of the game.  You tend to soldier through games with a little higher difficulty factor (even if it's unfair) if you really like what's happening in the game world around you.  But if it has neither, the motivation to continue just isn't there.

Oh, and I don't think you're off on the Zombies Ate My Neighbors, but that's a game that's beloved for it's theme and variety.  I can't say for sure, but I expect there isn't a giant killer baby in Yo Bro!  I wish ZAMN had better music too, though.  Pretty great arcade style couch co-op though!

Now Fester's Quest is a game with good music!  I love most of the NES sunsoft releases just for this reason.  FQ is example where I was willing to put up with the respawning enemies, weapon downgrades from getting hit, and other obnoxious things just because I was enjoying the overall experience.

I played it about half way through but it got to the point that I couldn't get any further with the absurd movement of the weapons not killing things. I think I rescued 2 family members before that happened

I definitely agree that accessibility is a huge issue with Deep Blue, especially if your gaming time is limited. And I only recently became a defender of it because I only just recently sat down and gave it a good honest try and play through, and sweet lord was it an exercise of cruel masochism!

I also have extremely limited gaming time as well nowadays (2nd year law student) and have been using said time to re-play some of the more universally disliked games on the TG in an attempt to get a better understanding and, hopefully, a new appreciation for some of these titles.

So far I've enjoyed China Warrior, can appreciate Deep Blue and King of Casino, and I still hate Drop Off with a passion.

Seriously guys, I really hate that game

I enjoy this thread because it reminds me that I have yet to really play Deep Blue (I was pissed off at it years ago, but then one of the Brothers Duomazov explained the strategy needed for victory...well, that was years ago and I still haven't been too eager to revisit Deep Blue seriously...

BUT EVERY TIME A THREAD LIKE THIS OCCURS, it reaffirms my desire to give Deep Blue another chance.

This makes me happy.

Now, Drop Off is another one of those games I put in for a little bit and then find myself swapping out...I never really give it a chance.

BUT EVERY TIME SOMEONE SAYS THEY LIKE DROP OFF (which isn't too often), it recharges my hope.

Just looking at the list, I don't think that Double Dungeons or Talespin are any marvels of good game design, but both of them work well enough as games.  I'm honestly surprised that they got votes at all when in the company of many of the other games on this list.
Current want list:  Bomberman 93

Don't worry, lots of folks have defended Double Dungeons.

Nobody has defended Ballistix or Falcon.

I even admitted it's not worthy of "worst ever" after talking about how dull it was.  In fact, out of the games on this list, if I had to choose among them, I would probably choose DD and China Warrior.
