The worst port ever!
« on: November 04, 2014, 10:29:34 AM »
Well, at least that I've played so far. I got PCE Golden Axe in the mail today and absolutely hate it. I mean... The game looked bad in videos, but videos just do not compare to actually playing the game. The play mechanics are all messed up and the graphics may be worse than the Master System version. About the only thing this game has going for it is the audio.

I saw the thread title "The worst port ever!" and before clicking on the thread the first thing that popped into my mind was Golden Axe.

The worst port ever on any system probably should go to Pit-Fighter on the SNES.

"Worst" port is very subjective. Even with the disclaimer, Ayce seems to be thinking of "worst game that is a port". The quality of the "porting" of a game should factor in the source material/target platform and additional content/upgrades should be taken into consideration. In this case, we at least got a great soundtrack and cool cinemas. Compare Ninja Warriors PCE to the arcade and there is more of a contrast.

But it too had the 2-player gameplay cut. The Genesis version is better as a game.

I've been thinking lately that there's very little reason to own a Sega CD, especially with a Turbo Duo. Are there any ports that are significantly better on the SCD than the TG/PCECD?

I love the Genesis/Sega CD versions of this game. It would have been cool if the Sega CD had an update like the PCE... but at least the game was still fun on the Genesis.

I've not played Ninja Warriors on the PCE as of yet, but I do remember really not enjoying the arcade game. It was cool how they used two screens to show the action, but it felt clunky the way these robot ninja's moved around. Maybe that was part of the design to make it feel more mechanized.

I remember I downloaded the ISO to play in an emulator and was convinced the ISO image was messed up.

No, the port is just that bad.

I wouldn't really say ports per se, but there are plenty of good reasons to own a Sega CD - Lunar 1&2, Popful Mail, Robo Aleste, Dark Wizard, Terminator, Sonic CD...

Sonic CD is way overrated and Lunar is found on the PS1 (or Saturn if you know Japanese). I didn't say no reason at all to own but, but little reason. Just a few games, most of them found not seriously inferior on the Genesis or the PC Engine CD.

Gunboat is better than Falcon.

Falcon might be true to the computer version, though.

So, I don't know.

I love Sonic CD. It was one of the last of the best Sonic games... I think the only fun sonic games were Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic CD. Just about everything after that was garbage.

Actually this is the worst port on the PCE

I didn't realize that Gunboat was even a game outside if the PCE/TG. I hated Gunboat, but if I ever get the chance to play the original I'll have to give it a shot.

Lunar 1&2 on the PS1/Saturn are essentially totally different (and inferior) games.

What! Robo Aleste, Silpheed, Vay & Shining Force are amazing. The cd shining force blows away the others versions.

Many people like these more for various reasons: Shin Negami Tensei, Death Bringer, Alshark, Burai, Popful Mail, Cosmic Fantasy Stories, Silky Lip, Snatcher, Cobra II, Psychic Detectives,  After Armageddon, Pro Yakyu, Ninja Warriors, Black Hole Assault, Shermatlocks, RotTKIII, Nobunaga's Ambition, Genghis Khan, Schwartzchild, Prince of Persia.

But there are so many worthwhile games in general worth playing like Keio, Shining Force CD, Dungeon Explorer, Android Assault, Robo Aleste, Silpheed, Lunars, Vay, Dark Wizard, Dune, Urusei Yatsura, 3 x 3 Eyes, Ranma 1/2, Final Fight CD, Shadowrun, Secret of Monkey Island, Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Master II, Heart if the Alien, Mickey Mania, etc.

I'm not really a fan of these kinds of 3D games, but Soulstar, Battle Corps, Thunderhawk, Batman Returns, Batman & Robin and others are very cool.

I don't like any version of these, but Earthworm Jim and Eternal Champions are basically fully realized versions of the original games in their series.

Lunar SS is a radically different game than SSS. I think that SS is very overrated and SSS is underappreciated, but the original Lubar us still a playable RPG and that is valuable in itself. Eternal Blue may be closer to its remake aesthetically, but that's because of the concentration of artwork in the original.

I know that you are unique in that you don't appreciate unique versions of games enough to play them. There are usually a few peopke like you in forums like this. Although I get that kind of perspective, I don't understand why people who insist that 16-bit ports of arcade games that have since been sold in emulated form are pointless to play... bother with real hardware at all. If there's such a thing as a "best" version and it makes others obsolete, whh not just stick to a PC and roms then?
