Seriously though. It doesn't even look like he does in the cartoon, which would be forgivable if the toy itself wasn't complete garbage, and if most of the other OG Autobots didn't look much better by comparison. Sure, liberties had to be taken to make the Diaclone mechs seem more dynamic for the show, but most characters resemble their toys very well. Hell, even Jazz/Meister's toy has a friggin smirk!
And what do we get with Ironhide? Well, you get a gangly robot with a derpy face hidden behind a windscreen, and a little "base" with a missile launcher (which doesn't work on mine, btw) and a bunch of other detachable pieces that are mostly pointless beyond being prone to getting lost. All this comes together to form what I thought at first to be a pretty respectable Onebox van replica, but the joint lines kind of ruin the look. So, why would they make the alt mode break up into so many pieces? They very easily could have pulled off getting just a robot out of the van, without the silly battle base. None of the other Diaclones do this. Shit, even Motormaster manages to get a robot, albeit a blocky one, out of a semi truck WITH trailer? What's your excuse, Ironhide?
So what were Takara(?) thinking when they made this pile of Diacrap? All the other Diaclones/Micro Change figures look pretty proportionate for the most part, even the triple changers, but not this guy.
Perhaps the worst thing is that we have yet to have a decent Ironhide toy in his G1 likeness. I have the Universe Classics version, and it came so very close, but that figure is a whole other ball park of f*ckupery. There've been some decent third-party attempts at a respectable figure, but those are a bit too cost-prohibitive for me.
Look, I'm 23 years old. I wasn't around when these toys were new, so I don't get that "wow" factor that I'm sure some of you had in your youth over these...but I couldn't imagine being anything but disappointed in this toy, even if you hadn't already seen the show.
Therefore, I'm removing Ironhide from my G1 Transformers shelf. He's just too out of place amongst all the other better Autobots.
Does anyone here feel the same? I can't be the only one...Ironhide's shittiness is so legendary there ought to be memes about it. Anyway, there's my rant.
