PC-Engine price guides - Any exist?
« on: January 23, 2015, 08:24:52 AM »
Hey Everyone,

There are a few titles I know are expensive to get, such as Magical Chase, Dracula X, Sylphia, Sapphire, Kaze Kiri, Steam Hearts, Dead of the Brain 1 & 2, Faucette Amour, etc, but that's just from experience. I'm sure there are loads of other titles that might be worth something or not much at all.

Does any list or price guide exist which can help people figure out if a game is being overpriced or under priced or priced just right? Perhaps just to keep things simple maybe we could compile a list of games that are currently going for more than they were sold originally? That way, at least inexperienced people know what to look out for?

Nope. Search forum for the age-old debate on the problems with price guide. The very act of creating a guide "legitimizes" the price.

Also, guide should be dynamic, not static.

Also, eBay should not be final (only) arbiter on price.

Basically, it's a complex pile of shite.

Sounds reasonable enough. How about something even more simpler? Like a general list of "easy to get" vs "harder to get". Or some common/rarity scale?

Price guide is a bad idea.  Rarity guide is not so much of a bad idea IMHO.

DigitalPress had most of their stuff rated by rarity, so while it has become unhinged from reality regarding price, the rarity ratings aren't that off to my knowledge.  That place is like a graveyard now though.

Sounds like a rarity guide would be more consistent since games are no longer being printed. Price, I agree will always change so it isn't a good indicator to track metric data against.

About the only thing a rarity guide is good for is if some noob wants to compile a quick list of Teh Rarez!! or to validate the 1337ness of their shelf sitters.  For everyone else, a quick look on ebay will tell you a title's relative rarity: if there's only one or two listed, it's rare; if there's a couple dozen, it's not.

Here is a 100% complete list of PCE-CD games that are worth more in the US than their original selling price (keep in mind that original selling price for PCE-CD games was already pretty high, so $60 isn't enough to land on this list).  I didn't include cards since I don't like cards and therefore they don't exist in my world.  Also note that since PCE games aren't in ravenous demand like TGFX games are, they tend to go unsold more often than their US counterparts.

Akiyama Jin no Suugaku Mystery
Bazaru de Gozaru
Chiki Chiki Boys
Dead of the Brain 1&2
Double Dragon 2
Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari
Dracula X: Rondo of Blood
Dragon Knight & Graffiti
Faussete Amour
Galaxy Deka Gayvan
Go Go Birdie Chance
Hi-Leg Fantasy
Image Fight 2
Kaze Kiri
Kids Station (any of them)
Madou Monogatari I
Nexzr (either version)
Popful Mail
Pop'n Magic
Puyo Puyo Tsuu CD
Rainbow Islands
Rayxanber 3
Renny Blaster
Rolling Sun
Sapphire
Spriggan
Steam Hearts
Strider
Sylphia
Terraforming (absurd that it's even on this list)

Actually, what is the game "Rolling Sun"? I tried looking around but it doesn't show up in any database. Is it a typo? The closest thing I can find is Lords of the Rising Sun.

Yeah, the only game from that list I own is Popful Mail. I am 1337 now.

EDIT: I got it for 48 € from Italy in late 2013. No idea about the current price.

Here is a 100% complete list of PCE-CD games that are worth more in the US than their original selling price...

Not a bad list but I'd remove Strider, for it can be had for under $60 with patience.

What would a US Turbo Grafx with controller, RF Adapter (No Power Supply) Keith Courage, and Hit the Ice be worth?
