UPDATE
just tried this on my new PCE I just got and it works perfectly fine.
I like it. Big sprites.

there is some cool sprite scaling too and the music is pretty decent.  You might get stumped later on as there is a part that asks you questions and you need to get 3 of them right in order to progress iirc.

Sprite scaling?  Are you sure you aren't thinking of the arcade version?

I haven't played much of the PCE one but I distinctly remember it lacking the scaling that the arcade port had.  Not really a complaint; it would have been hard enough to pull off on the SNES, let alone the PCE sans any scaling hardware.

You've piqued my curiosity though.  This game has been on my list of "must-owns" for awhile, but I haven't paid it much attention recently due to the language barrier.

Don't expect it to be SNES or even match the arcade in quality but it is there so too will you find sprite scaling in Afterburner and Parodius DA

Scaling is not uncommon in PCE games (HuCard and CD) and is usually better than non-Mode 7 SNES scaling. Even stuff like mosaic effects. Way too many to list, probably at least 100.

I'd like some examples, please. I can't think of many games that have scaling.

I can only think of the GoT compilation disc which has true scaling.

Pce can't do rotation.

SNES can't do scaling, rotation or transparencies for anything but a single tile layer. The rest are all "fake".

It doesn't matter if it's "true" or not when it's just used as an effect, like it is abused more often than not in SNES games. A good example is the GoT 4-in-1, which you actually believed was real-time.

A good example of a mosaic effect is the battle-entering map effect in CF4 Chapter 1. Also the skull boss in Sapphire.

Bomberman '93 victory screen and Art of Fighting title screens featuring scaling effects.

There are loads of 60fps "transparency" effects as well, many of which do things that can't be achieved by the SNES hardware effect.

I recall the scaling in After Burner, and it's pretty impressive, and the scaling in Sapphire is even better. So, does Valkyrie no Densetsu use a similar effect?

I'll let you know if I ever find out. This game is harder than I thought. Or maybe I'm just rubbish.

I just skimmed through a video of the arcade version of Valkyrie no Densetsu and did not see any scaling in the game. Especially not the kind that is "more real" than PC Engine game scaling.

The title scales, as does the ground when she jumps down from the platform at the beginning.  In the PCE version, she jumps off & it just cuts away to when she lands.  I think the scaling when you get the "get-big" powerup looks better too.  Did you skim past those bits?

And yes, the scaling is "more real" than the PCE version, because the arcade hardware is built for scaling, whereas the PCE has no scaling hardware built in.  Whether it looks just as good or not is beside the point.

there is certainly a lot more stuff happening in the arcade version including 2 player co-op and it is also around a megabyte in size while the pc-e version is around 4megabits.  most of the pc-e version the scaling only appears on Valkyrie's sprite  in certain places while the arcade brethren you see a lot of scaling appear in the background giving that sense of depth which is quite missing in the pc-e version. Still I would like to have seen what Namco could have achieved if they made games that were were higher than 4megabits.  Even Parodius DA has scaling especially the blue bell bomb powerup and even the green bell power up.

I don't think the size of the game will matter when it comes to scaling. The hardware on the Namco System 2 was made for those types of effects to be done in hardware.

this bit is where you notice the scaling in the arcade but it sure isn't in the pc-e version

but yea certain big spell will allow you to scale up
