I own and beat all 3 NES Ninja Gaidens and the PCE one.

Technically I didn't pay much for my PCE Ninja Gaiden, something still had to give. I got mine from Ebay user 16-bit/Mad Gear LLC (I bought it from the guy IN person at Magfest 5) I had to give up one of my best Super Famicom games for the credit. Of course it hurt badly in the initial moment but it was worth it.
DUDE! You have to tell us who 16-bit is! A 40+ year old nerd? A twenty-something lucky bastard who makes lots of cash on ebay? If he has any children, I've significantly contributed to their college fund, I'll tell you that. :)

The latter, looks to be in his upper 20's. That guy was cool as hell! He took a break once, and we played some Rescue Mission for Sega Master System together. We didn't get to talk much because at Magfest 5, I was coming down with the flu and had a laryngitis problem so I couldn't talk.

I really can't bring myself to really play the PCE verison of Ninja Gaiden. I think its mostly the music. The NES tunes are awsome and the PCE should have just been better, but I was greatly disappointed in that department. That said I still like it as a PCE game, but like everyone said the NES verisons are just better.

Speaking of 16-bit, he was at Tekkoshocon in Pittsburgh (actually the expo center in Monroeville) this year too. I bought SF2:CE off him in just about brand new condition along with Tales of Phantasia (PSX), an avenue 6 pad, Fire Emblem 3, Hyper Iria, SRW Final F. Suffice to say I did little else at the con but buy games. Then we talked for like 2 hours on gaming stuff. He definately is a fellow gamer. He said he was going to be at the East Coast Gaming Expo in Reading, PA this year. Three of my friends and I are definately going. It should be a blast.

The fact that the PCE version of NG is a port of the *NES* version is a testament to the greatness of the NES version :)

... Rescue Mission ...

If ever there was a gain that would allow you to bond with 16-bit, it would be Rescue Mission! :)

Hey, when is that? I'll be in New Jersey and I have to educate myself on the East Coast events.

I'll vouch for that.

Otakon 2006 -August 4-6 2006 in Baltimore Maryland. (I have doubts I'll make it to this one)

Magfest 6 - January 4-7, 2007 in Vienna, Virginia, right on the edge of Virginia into Maryland.

Its the last Saturday and Sunday of August, which would be the 26th and 27th. Actually I think there was talk of getting together and going to an arcade on Friday, but I don't want to pay for an extra day at the hotel. They have a web page up at www.ecgxpo.com . I'm looking forward to the Atari Combat competition even if I haven't played it in years. Maybe I should start a thread about it in General Chat and see how many east coasters are going. It would be cool to meet up with some of you guys.

Oh man, that's in west PA. I live just 13 miles from NYC in northern NJ, so it would be .... 120 miles for me.

That's not to say I won't go. But do folks actually live out in West PA?

I'm driving cross-country in a few days and I'll be drive through PA (I am on Rt. 80, IIRC). It always seemed very rural around there.

Ah dang, you win. Mine didn't come with a spine card, lol. It's all good though as long as I got it.

It's crazy though that it's a mixed bag of feelings toward the PCE version.
I forgot to mention that at Magfest, and this ain't no lie either, the moment I bought the game from 16 bit, I beat it the first time I slipped the card into my Duo-R. I didn't die nor use any ninja magic on Masked Devil, Jaquio and the demon statue. Thing is, the demon statue doesn't behave like the one on the NES. In fact his weak spot is more accessible making him slightly easier.

Well, it's all good, I just really liked the PC Engine version. It was a nice version. Funny thjing is that people seem to think that I hate the NES versions, which is just crazy! I like pretty much any version of this game as long as it ain't the Genesis/Megadrive version!

I'm the same way. Although I love trying any and every port of cool games, I can still spot the negative differences between them, rank them as games in general and seperately as ports, all while having personal favorites that aren't necisarily the ultimate version of any given game.

I think that many last-gen to next-gen ports suffer when they try to pretty much recycle the original instead of totally redoing certain things.

A great example of how a straight 8-bit to 16-bit port should be done is Adventure Island/Dragon's Curse.

WBIII/MWII is still a better game simply because of the secret shops and warps that become accessible when you max out your charm stones(why the hell would they remove this!?!?), but the PCE/Turbo game technically has all-round better graphics and sound and arguably, gameplay/controls(the jump from 15fps to 60fps sure is nice  :D ).

But the original is still better in my opinion and favorite-wise they're equal.

Heh, exist might be a better term to use   . Yeah I happen to live about an hour north of Pittsburgh and the boonies doesn't even begin to describe it. Reading is probably about 2 or so hours from where I'm currently living. Anyway I'm going to start a thread over in the General Chat area and see who might be going.
