I thought they did a good job of not just covering the standard games, though they could have gone further. I was disappointed that they weren't wooed by WtPC's charms despite having seemingly played through a whole route, but there's no accounting for taste.

I was also a little annoyed how despite some good words and admitting that the language barrier was a major issue, they still seemed a bit dismissive of the system at the end. They came right out and said that they'd probably enjoy some of the games if they were in English. It's not like it's the games' fault that you don't understand the language they were made in. It's a Japanese console released in Japan after all.

In the end, I think the commenters are harder on it (and on Dave and Joe) than anything. I think Game Sack had good intentions and at least focused mostly on what they liked about the games.

Yes, I agree.

We still need. ANOTHER PC-FX video to be made, but this time hosted by folks who have ***more intimate knowledge*** of the games/software.

Personally, I don't have the expertise, and it might require several contributors, but the PC-FX will only be appreciated when deeper, more sophisticated reviews are shared by folks who  ***know the games*** ...

This is not to say that Game Sack did not provide an important service—it did. It was the "outsider, newbie" first-experience with PC-FX.  This is what most folks will experience. It is honest about the language barrier and lack of support available (FAQ, guides, etc.)

But, as I said, we still need a second video, one that can speak to the little charms of the PC-FX.

We don't need a "to buy or not to buy" video, we need a "what is the typical dumbass not going to understand" video...

Well this is PCFX and this deserves its own thread. Do you even own a PCFX? Why are you posting in here? Why are you even in this forum?

While it's duplicate content, it's still 5x more interesting and useful than anything evo has ever posted.  He's just jealous.... and a trolling scumbag.

It's a niche system for either A) People who can read noodlecart moonrunes,or at least fumble their way through or B) People who click around a lot, hoping for tits

The PC-fX might as well have been called "Thing Arkhan always wanted", because I basically sit and play hentai titty clicky FMV/Digital comic games most of the time, or RPGs.

lol, all of my sex education came from Jast.   Thanks, Jast.

I'd really like to see that video!

As a newbie here that's not a long-time PC-FX fan ... and also now as new PC-FX owner ... that doesn't speak Japanese ... I've got to say that Game Sack pretty much nailed my feelings on the existing software library.

They did go on way too long about the language barrier ... but I loved the bit at the end about giving up instead of sitting through another long-winded FMV cutscene.

It's for people that like more than just Dracula X and shewties on the PCE.

But can't the same be said about the PlayStation and the Saturn? What are the games that you find uniquely fun on the PC-FX ... and what is it about them that appeals to you?

I'd love to hear that side of the story.

I can answer this well, having spent most of my teenage years playing digital comics, and being an anime fan.

PC-FX is essentially an otaku's wet dream.    You've got games like Sparkling Feather that play to all of your anime triggers, and wrap it up in a nice SRPG.

It's got all of the digital comics / sim games, too.    It's just all very anime-centric.   This is what sets it apart from PS1 and Saturn, really.   Team Innocent is an excellent adventure game.

Pretty much every game is an anime with gameplay elements.   It's a fun feeling to be able to essentially interact with a cartoon full of characters you like.  You get animated character portraits, voices, cutscenes... the works.    It's definitely unique.

The closest you get to this on PS1 and Saturn, are the RPGs and such with anime designs (Lunar), and all of the digital comics that appear there also.

PC-FX just basically does that for ALL of the games, and is bleeding with unique digital comic/rpg experiences.   That's practically all it does outside of Zenki/Chipchan/Zeroigar.

You don't have your Oddworld, Jumping Flash, or Crash Bandicoot stuff.    You just have anime.   Everywhere, and you get the added charm of the familiar, warm, PCE style chiptunes.

Unfortunately, if you can't understand what the hell you're reading, nearly every game loses it's charm.   An RPG is pretty worthless if you don't even know what the story is.   It might be fun to play through from a mechanical standpoint, but you lose out on the story.    You're not getting to experience the games for what they actually are.

This might be part of why the machine didn't do well?    That or the lack of the 3D hardware capabilities that you can get with the FXGA.

With PS1/Saturn, the variety helps push it along if you're not into RPG/Digital Comics.    People rave about the PS1/Saturn imports because they're importing shooters.   You don't need to read.  You just blow shit up.   They dog on the PC-FX because they can't read.   That's not the game's faults.

Notice how the only expensive PCFX games are the ones round eye can play?

If PC-FX had gotten a bit more variety to the library, I think it would have kicked some severe ass.

To me, the sad reality of the PC-FX is that even though its library is highly focused on a few particular styles of game, it still received neither remarkable quantity nor quality in these styles.

If you want to talk quantity, the Saturn and PSX absolutely bury it. It's not quite as bad if you're looking at 1995 and 1996 only, but if you take the entire system libraries, you're probably looking at something on the order of several times as many games in the digital comic/comic hybrid genres alone.

When it comes to quality, individual taste is going to come into play. But seriously, where is Sakura Taisen on the PC-FX? Where is Policenaughts? Or even Dinosaur Island? To me, besides reeking "low budget", most of the anime-game stuff on the PC-FX doesn't have the shine of the best stuff on other systems. There is no AAA PC-FX game in any genre. Several games have some real charm, and some unique ideas from time to time as well. Yet there was never a moment in the system's life when it got something really worth talking about. Team Innocent is the only one that comes close, and even that one doesn't hold up well if you take out the historical context.

Here's (an unsourced) list of the top ten selling PC-FX games and the number of games sold. Top selling games don't tell the whole story, but that list indicates a pretty unimpressive legacy. The number one game is a straight port of a PC game with voices added to it.

If someone ever does make a more extensive introduction to the best of the PC-FX, they're going to have to zero in more closely than just a general glossing of individual games. It's going to require digging deep and separating the good ideas from all the other mediocrity. You're going to have to really explain the wacky humor of Megami Tengoku II, or the quality anime of Zeroigar, or the serious story of Nirgends, or even the ambition of Team Innocent. That kind of thing.
