I must admit that shade of gray is nice as it highlights the shape and casing mold of the console better than solid black, but I feel the TG (PAL or NTSC) overall was unfortunately devoid of any physical features.

To me, the SNES and Genny looked better.

Ninty's console wasn't winning any beauty contests IMO, but the power/reset buttons and the eject lever were nifty constructs on an otherwise physically dull machine. The white/gray scheme with indigo buttons is a very welcome selection.

The Genny was pretty sexy with its dome-like cart slot (complete with logo), headphone jack and audio slider. The shiny black finish is boss; angles and curves can be accentuated as light reflects off the console.

The TG-16 just didn't have a visual feature to remember other than the huey slot (and that looked like it was missing something). And the black finish didn't shine like the Genny's either.

That said, NEC would eventually produce the best-looking console of the 16-bit generation (and one of the best looking consoles ever).

*sighs in rapt admiration*

As much as I adore the cute, little wonder that is the Genesis 3, the PCE Duo R/X is just all orders of aesthetic sexiness. I favor the RX in particular since that lovely combination of snow-white and delicately pale lavender graciously extends to the 6 button d-pad.
My past-life would've surely led to our demise, and I had left it not a moment too soon. Our escape, though dangerous, had gone well. The train ride, sunlight, and passing snow-covered pine trees came together in a flickering show of our bright, new future together. Her head rested on my shoulder as she soundly slept to the gentle rocking of the passenger car. We felt freedom. We felt peace.

^ I agree with you on the Genesis, but only Gen2 and Gen3. Gen1 looks too busy.

Genny1 does appear a tad crowded, but of the three initial 16-bit machines, I think it's the best-looking of the lot. Genny2 was a nice makeover, and the charmingly compact Genny3 was brilliant. The greatness that is the Sega CDX not only beats the other Sega CD variants IMO, but I rate it higher than a number of other gaming machines.

Genesis 1 is an ugly wart. It looks like a kid's toy, but an ugly toy. I feel it is one of the goofiest-looking designs, ever—I'll give it that  (the SuperGrafx is goofy, too).  Of course, consoles can be bland and boring...so being "goofy" certainly isn't the worst thing. :)

I agree that the other consoles (and variations) were pretty dull, so little design touches can make all the difference.

SNES was saved by prominent power/eject. SMS looks like a LazerTag accessory (a shield, or a auxiliary battery pack).

Etc.

Etc.

Today I learned the is a Palgrafx and a Korean variant. I'm really digging that Korean one. Pal? Eh. Like others have said, the logo kills it for me. So bland.

Up to the 16bit generation, consoles weren't hitting on much in the looks department (save the remodeled NES). The Genny1 was pretty damn sweet upon arrival.

To each their own.

Sweet? Hahaahhahahahahahahaha. :)

It looks like a lunar base for Legions of Power.

Especially with a cartridge sticking out of the top.

The original Sega Mark III is one of the best looking consoles to date. The 2600 Jr would look stylish if it was released today. Then there's stuff like the Famicom Twin units. The AV Famicom/NES Top Loader in comparison is a boring bump along the road and it didn't even come out until the emerging 32-bit generation.

It looks like a generic ripoff of the TG-16. I do not approve.

The mark 3 was fugly! It looked like a piece of 1970's medical equipment or a dot matrix printer or something lol

I guess that the PCE IFU combo must look like a fugly 70's washer/dryer set to you. :?

The Sega Mark III looks like it was taken straight out of the Nostromo:

The NES 101 looks like it a section from a preschool plastic playground:

Actually it kinda does! Lol I've always preferred the look of the core grafx 1&2 and the TG-16/CD.

The top loader NES does look ridiculous. Especially with a cart inserted. Best thing about it was the controller.

megacd/sega cd + gen2/megadrive2 + 32x = Frankenstein system, very messy

but there again

supergrafx plus briefcase cd rom ain't a stunner either (strangely pc engine lt plus rau30 plus super cd is sexy in a goofy techy way)

(modified ) supergrafx seems a bit odd

I partially agree with toymachine; the Mark III looks like it should be sitting on a cart next to an ICU bed, on which an elderly patient refuses to finish the scrambled eggs and toast from the cafeteria. Yet, I don't find it ugly, but rather interesting.

No love for the top loader? Hehe. Oh well, one man's trash...
