Damn colonials!

Everyone (that matters) knows that real money has a picture of the Queen (God bless her) on it.

Just because you'll be celebrating Independence Day Mistake again soon doesn't make me doubt for a second that you'd all rather be British.

What I will miss from Konami is any & all chances of seeing my favorite franchises from years past(besides Hudsons library).  Most of all, Suikoden, we've been begging for a true sequel to Suikoden 5 for some 10 years.  We got Tierkreis(brand new universe but ok game) & a PSP game(I think another universe) that never got a US release.  Besides that, I'll miss the opportunity to see more Contra, Castlevania(original series, not the new one), & Metal Gear Solid(yup, I still enjoy them).  One can only hope that whoever gets these franchises will treat them with love, rather than drag them thru the mud.  It would rock for someone to take Bonk & do something really nice with it, among other Hudson properties! There's probably other Konami franchises I'm forgetting about, but, I don't think there's been any new franchises in a couple decades from Konami that have interested me other than Suikoden, which I think is 20 years old this year.

Come to think of it, I hope Microsoft doesn't buy Konami, now THAT would suck!  I'd rather Sony or Nintendo buy them, but more preferably someone who can do multi-console games for the benefit of everyone.

Reading the article, it seems more like Konami is refocusing where they want to spend their money into other parts of the business.  A "fire sale" of IP seems unlikely, but the benefit is that if they're getting out of console development then the IPs could go to licensees who make some amazing games instead of just pachislo Castlevania cashins and the like.

How would the sale of individual IPs be handled in case it ever happens? How to enter the auctions? An individual obscure 1989 IP might be cheap enough for the community to buy.

Good article, so I guess the shakeup news is getting more valid beyond the rumor stage.

Has a company sold off their IP like we're suggesting before? Is it actually possible for the community to pool money together to get something or is this just a joke? I'm curious even though it seems like a joke to me :).

If they were dissolved the IPs would probably go up for sale along with any studios they owned. THq a couple years ago were a good example of this, but I dont think Konami is going out of business...I wish they saw the light of day and sold all the Hudson IPs to someone who actually want to make games.

They'll be fine, I think they'll just keep their IPs and milk them over time - that is what the article's author thinks after all. They'll just be licensing out the franchises to other dev/publishers, let them do the heavy lifting in developing/publishing while still getting a cut.

Konami's Hideo Kojima, mostly known for his Metal Gear series, but also writer/director for things like Snatcher and Policenauts.

When I started reading about Konami's shakeup, I really wasn't surprised.  Some of their biggest franchises haven't been seen in years.  Here's a simple example, and I might be missing something, but it proves a point.

Franchise - Year of last release in North America - Game Released

Metal Gear - (Sept 2015) - Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Castlevania - (Feb 2014) - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2
Frogger - (2013) - Frogger's Crackout
Silent Hill - (Oct 2012) - Silent Hill: Book of Memories
Zone of the Enders - (Oct 2012) - Zone of the Enders HD Collection
Contra - (March 2011) - Hard Corps: Uprising
Rocket Knight/Sparkster - (May 2010) - Rocket Knight
Suikoden - (March 2009) - Suikoden Tierkreis
Gradius - (March 2009) - Gradius ReBirth

There may have been cellphone releases I'm not thinking about, but there are some heavy hitters in there that haven't seen a new entry in a very long time.  I'm a huge fan of Gradius and Contra, and both games have been on the back-burner for a while now.  Let's also be honest, with what happened to Castlevania, we won't see a new installment in the old-school formula ever again most likely.

All this to say that, I'm not surprised Konami is on the way out.  Silent Hills just got canceled, Zone of the Enders 3 got canned a few years back, and now it looks like they'll focus almost entirely on MGS if they decide to stay in the industry at all.  They're making serious money from Pachinko machines now, so maybe they'll go the SNK route and only focus on the gambling market O_o
