Cheap TurboExpress Power Supply Options
« on: May 12, 2015, 07:49:42 AM »
I have a Turbo Express coming and started looking for a PSU for it. There are actually some readily available nice/cheap options.

I went for a switching (regulated) PSU that is 7.5v, 1000mA (1A), with a 3.5mm x 1.35mm center positive tip. Here's a link. They're $5.90/shipped from the US or $4.80 from China.

Yes, the tip size is correct

According to their specs, they should be perfect. When mine arrives I will do thorough testing to verify this.

I actually ordered another PSU for my Nomads and Game Gears from the same seller.

Let us know how they work.

I have an official one and a Nyko or Naki one.

The power supply works perfectly. I tested it for about two or three hours today. The tip fits exactly--nice and snug. I imagine these are actually better choice than the original PSUs, since they're regulated voltage and much smaller.

The seller that I linked to ships fast too. I ordered it on Monday night from ebay seller superpowersupply and it arrived this afternoon

Can you paste the exact link for the TE power supply?  The first link gave me a list and I don't want to order the incorrect one.  Great find, btw!

After a bad experience with a switching power supply (introduced electrical interferences in my SFAMICOM) I don't think I'm buying anything different than original regulated power supplies and, in my case, a stepdown.

Ouch. What type did you use? Did you make sure the voltage and amperage were exact?

Here are some links to the exact one that I'm using (EU or US plug versions):
US version shipped from China: $4.79
US version shipped from USA: $5.89
EU version shipped from China: $4.79

I'd be very intersted in this mod, but I haven't seen a good writeup of the method (or battery specs) for doing it. Does anyone have a link or instructions?

those cheapo chinese supplies can be hit or miss.  some do introduce interference.  I have also heard that they are more prone to cause a fire if they fail.

I just use eneloop rechargeable in mine.

I do have some of those cheap chinese supplies around though, but I try not to use them.
