Music Ripping questions
« on: August 02, 2006, 12:42:02 PM »
I have some HES files and was wondering how to rip your own HES files from roms, and if there was a utility to do so?

Also is there an easy way to convert HES files to an MP3 or something I could put on an MP3 player?

Just the following:
Winamp
NEZPlug (Plug In)
And any Plug-In that converts anything to MP3,  from the winamp website.

Cool. I am using the winamp plugin now, the only thing I dont like is to scroll to the next song in the HES file, I have to fast forward to the end of the time bar. I wish I could just hit the skip to next track key hehe.

Depending on what plug-in you're using, if you don't mind waiting, it can automatically jump from track to track and make MP3's in the process. It's kinda fast too.

I find the Audio Overload player to be more faithful to the original music than the Winamp plugin.  I'd suggest checking it out.

NEZplug+ is the plug-in of choice, the audio emulation is almost spot on. Go to Software/NEZplug and grab the first archive (the second is the source code).

You could just use my playlists which, after all, are also made for that purpose.

IMO, Sometimes those HES rips sound slightly better than the actual Hucard itself.

It's obvious while hearing drums.

Oh yeah speaking of HES files, Bloody Wolf needs a total re-rip. When I load up the one from Zophar.net, it either freezes my winamp, or doesn't play anything at all.

This has probably been asked before, but is there a way to get extract chip-based music and sounds from CD games?  Also interested in extracting music from Saturn games in addition to PCE/Turbo CD games.

Ripping HES files entails cutting out the game's sound-related code and sequence data as well as determining the entry points for the initialization and play routines of the music driver. Knowledge of HuC6280 asm is a must, as well as knowing the PCE's sound hardware, memory management, and interupt handling. Since ripping generally involves determing what low-level machine code is doing at a higher, more abstract level, there is no utility that will handle anything out there.

Sure there is. CD games use the same CPU (which also handles PSG), so they really aren't any different than HuCard games. Actually, in most cases they are easier to rip, as most CD games use the exact same music driver (the one that is found on the System Card).

Try the rip from my website (Narazumono Sentou Butai).

Playing a HES file directly without a playlist can often lead to weird behaviours like freezings or crashes of the player. That's usually because you're trying to play banks which don't contain music data and are not meant to be played. A playlist saves you from the hassle of browsing through mindless hexadecimal banks.

Hey, there hasn't been any HES news in a long time... are any new rips available somewhere?

Anyway, I've just ripped 2 new game soundtracks:

Appare! Gateball (lively loungy music)

and
Yuu Yuu Jinsei: Victory Life (groovy loungy music)
