Are there any demo discs for the Turbo?
« on: July 08, 2015, 03:14:39 PM »
So we're thinking about doing a Demo Disc episode and was going though my collection of demo discs figuring out what to include. Was there ever anything like that for the Turbo? Googling it, the internet seems to think the Gate of Thunder 4-in-1 disc is a demo disc. But it's definitely no such beast (thankfully). I've heard rumors of a Lords of Thunder demo disc but I've never heard any more than that. I know the PC Engine has "Special Version" demo-style HuCards but those are a bit hard for me to come by.

There's a ton of PC Engine demo discs with all kinds of crazy stuff, including lots of Mode 7 effects, exclusive mini games and misc. The PC Engine Catalog discs 1 - 6 + Duo RX A & B are a good start. Most of these have the complete game of Nectaris on them. One or two(?) have Bomberman '94 Special Edition/Caravan/Taikenban. Catalog 4 has Force Gear.

The Seiya Monogatari/AFS demo disc has Cychorider on it.

There's the Tengai Makyou II/Dragon Slayer disc.

Deden no Den is a stand-alone Bomberman '94 demo with everything replaced by Kabuki Danjuro.

Motteke Tomago only exists as a demo disc.

There's an Emerald Dragon taikenban (like most, it's not simply a short gameplay segment).

There's a Fuun Kabuki Den taikenban, but it's more of a straight segment from the full game.

Snatcher Pilot Disk has a bunch of exclusive assets.

All but the stand-alone Bomberman '94 taikenban (unless the title begins with a different name) are included in the "Turbo Grafx 16 CD PCECD Complete CD-ROM Collection" torrent.

Since demos like the Special Version HuCards weren't sold commercially, I don't think that you should nitpick enough to not just play them on the Everdrive.

Isn't that an actual thing?

Thought someone here had one or something. Maybe it was just an iso, idk.

yes, on the pc engine cd rom

usually 2 different types, demo cd roms from magazines, freebies ( due to cheap nature of cd roms), hard to find, slightly pricey for desirable ones

http://auction.rakuten.co.jp/item/11697580/a/10017297/

the other type are limited editions trial or special versions of pc engine cd roms games called  (体験版 非売品/ trial editions  not for sale - sorry, my 'moon' language is minimal as I am british born Chinese, can read kanji though - mostly)

this another example of 非売品  not for sale  pc engine cd rom game

Tengai Makyou Deden no Den ( in a special bomber man game)

I just remembered, -I think that the Hyper Catalog 4 actually just shows a screenshot or two of Force Gear during the Tokimeki Memorial segment. Wouldn't be surprised if it was still unlockable though.

This was for kiosks...

So, I guess Joe needs to make a distinction between demo discs and how they were distributed to/accessed by the public...because folks today have a very distinct idea of "demo disc"...even though it has multiple meanings and contexts over time...

Yep, the Kiosk disc and the Lords of Thunder disc were the two that immediately sprung to my mind.  But those weren't intended for distribution to the public.

The number of demo discs jumps up astronomically once you get to Playstation and Dreamcast in the US as both of their official magazines distributed demo discs with the issues.

Those are a bit different.  The Sample LA games are really just retail copies with a sample sticker on the sleeve, no real differences from everything I've seen.

Wish I had known that before I sold my Rocket Coaster off lol.
