Pinning down early Genesis release "windows"...
« on: July 28, 2015, 03:56:04 PM »
Hey guys,

I've been doing research trying to get an idea of around when each of the early Genesis games was actually released.  This has included scouring Usenet posts, sales ads, and forum threads (including here!).  I've put together a spreadsheet with windows of time for each game, along with the claimed (but unsubstantiated) release date for each according to Wikipedia and GameFAQs.   Basically I am just trying to narrow down these windows as much as possible, which is the best we can really hope for since games didn't have hard street dates back then.  Some of the games I have down to a 2-week window, which is very good, but others can still be improved-upon quite a bit.

Basically what I am looking for is any information that anyone has that can help narrow these down.  Like your birthday is November 15th and you know for sure that you got games A & B that day, or whatever.  Vague memories are not really going to help, but something more concrete would be great.

I am going to want to continue with later games, going into February 1990 and beyond, so if anyone wants to chime in on those then that would be great, too.

Those early and late limit dates are not really set in stone, either.  They are just based on what concrete information I could find.

Thanks!

Chris

I had this posted over on Sega-16, but posted it here as well mainly to try and get Joe's attention, because I know that he has a lot of knowledge about the early days of the Genesis.

At this point, the real question marks for me are whether or not Revenge of Shinobi, Mystic Defender, and/or Zoom! made it out in December, or didn't come out until January of 1990, because I think that Truxton, Golden Axe, and Alex Kidd are firm January releases at this point.

Maybe if I hit "report to moderator" Joe will see it?

Joe is good at replying when you respond to a post of his, so I would go into the GameSack thread, reply to a post, but explain that you are really trying to confirm some of these titles (I would include link to this thread, but I would include the specific handful of 1989vs1990? titles—Revenge on top of Shonibi, Zuul!, etc.—over in GameSack thread...because what if he doesn't want to follow the link?)

Of that doesn't work, PM him and put "Stephen Baldwin" in the title.

I always thought Golden Axe was a launch title.  Just assumed it was.  (has a copyright date of 89 on the box, but that would jive with late January release I guess)
Also Buster Douglas Boxing came out "after" Feb 10, 1990.

I got my Genesis as a birthday gift in 89 (early October). Golden axe was my second game but I swear that was a Xmas gift that year. Only had altered beast between October and December

I wouldn't count on it.  A PM or email (assuming he has a public address for gamesack) is your best bet, especially if you bribe him with a couple packets of zigs for his colorado greens.

Golden Axe may have been a launch window title, but I remember how it took a while to come out. During the very early Genesis days, it felt excruciatingly long waiting for new releases to trickle in. If you look at mags at the time, you'll also see it reviewed or talk of it coming out soon after. It likely came out in Japan by the Genesis launch day, so they could preview it before relesse.

I can't comment on launch titles, but when my childhood friend had got a Genesis for Christmas in 89 he had Altered Beast and Zoom! He didn't end up getting Golden Axe until the next month after we played the crap out of it in the arcade. I believe he got it from Toys R US in Portland Oregon as that was the place to get our games back in the day.

One question you mean games that were made in 1989 and released in '89 or games made for the arcades in pre-'89 and released in '89/90? Also do you want ports of NES or SMS games or Genesis only games?

I am talking about when the Genesis games themselves were available in-store.  I am only interested in the Genesis release, but it can certainly be a game that was released for multiple systems.
