Hello everyone, new user looking to dive in!

First off, thank you to whatever administration accepted my request to join this forum. I was directed here reading an article about the pros and cons of various Turbo systems and decided it might be time to try and get involved in the community a bit. I dabble my feet in all kinds of places since I have been collecting for years (somewhere near 3000 CIB games and counting).

Still, out of all the systems I have ever collected on the Turbo seems to be one of the most complex and challenging to understand or tackle. I felt signing up to a fan forum would be my best shot to achieve my ultimate goals on this system and also gain a full understanding of my options from here on.

For some background, I started collecting some vintage games about a year after I met my current fiancee (about 8 years and counting now) and it began as just a small thing to introduce her to a few retro games she missed out on. Fast forward to today, I recently purchased a home back in January and more or less finished my primary work in setting up my entire basement to be a game area. I collect on all systems, but I also play on all systems. About 6 months ago I ended up dealing with a guy who sold me about 20 mint (with outer sleeve and all) Turbo games, so I picked up the system, controllers, and got myself all ready to play.

My first ever real experience with the system just happened a few days ago when I sat down with my fiancee to try out a game, Devil's Crush. She immediately fell in love with it and it went on to last many hours, and it provoked me to realize that this system was a genuine article with a lot of fun games to play just like the Genesis or Snes.

Unfortunately, now that I have dabbled a lot more into the system and compiled a list of games I'd like to find (I only collect US releases due to the vast amount I already buy in general), I came to the realization that the turbo system I own might not have been the smartest buy, and someone also told me I can't use my old controllers on a newer one if I decided to go that route. Then I read that the US duo systems have numerous problems with failure rates, need to be modded for Scart use, and that to do add ons for the other console requires a CD drive also prone to failure.. and an expensive system card.

All in all, deciding to take the plunge on this system has been quite an emotional challenge because it conflicts with my usually easy to follow guidelines. I try to collect only US stuff (even when it cost more) because my ocd would probably say that the moment I bought a Japanese title or hardware, that maybe I should consider doing that on everything, to which I'd go bankrupt

For someone like me who likes to collect US games and hardware, what are my best resources to look at in terms of achieving that goal and doing it correctly? Can I use my old pads on other systems using some kind of converter? I'm hoping to learn as much as I can here, and while i'm not a rich guy by any means, I am willing to spend some cash to get it done right within reason, even if it means I gotta save a bit. I'd really like the Turbo to join my setup in the same fashion all the rest of my stuff is (as right now it's hooked up by RF while the majority of my stuff is scart), so I feel I am doing a disservice to the system at the moment.

Lol, the name is actually a reference from goldeneye. As a child I didn't think to make that connection until some people teased me about it, but after nearly 2 decades I just decided to keep rolling with it, heh.

I've considered lifting my region restriction for both the turbo and the sega saturn due to the extent of the library difference between the regions, just if you saw my financial bleeding you'd see why I have to at least stagger things :p

So, a recapped Duo is a good solution, what about the drive itself? Is that something that people tend to need work on (laser problems, alignment issues, etc) or is that generally pretty solid?

Ah the gold PP7.  That's a pretty funny story.  Welcome aboard BTW!

Yeah getting Japanese games is almost a necessity for Turbo and Saturn.  Get a DUO and try to get one that's recapped and RGB Modded.  If you are a DIYer you can sometimes get a good deal on a duo in need of a recap but if that's not something you can do it'll probably be cheaper to buy one already set up.

And yeah you can find adapters or make them yourself.  IMO the controllers need extensions anyway.

You're definitely right about needing controller extensions, had to sit on the floor to play it the other day. I suppose the idea was to have the console right near you but not as practical these days

Are premade cable converters easy to find? I'm also not particular skilled with modding so, i'd definitely need to employ the help of another to get that off the ground.

Welcome.  I also collect for and play on many different platforms as well.  You may just find that the Turbo will quickly become one of your favorites.  Also, I typically only go for U.S. releases as well and it's almost impossible to ignore the vast and great Japanese library on NEC ' S fine hardware.  If nothing else, Rondo of Blood is a must own for anyone with CD capability.

The least expensive route to unlock the entire library would be to get a region modded PCE Duo.  There are a few folks on here that sell refurbished units at a very good price.

The controller cord length is a problem.  There are extensions you can buy.  I modded all of my controller's to have a longer cord length.

Welcome aboard!  Get some pics of your basement setup if you can.  A modded DUO is the way to go.  You get the biggest bang for the buck and you get access to the entire Turbo/PCE Library save for the Super Grafx.

I think I definitely would like a Duo, I was hell bent on getting the add ons but I think the duo is the way to go for me, just gonna need to track down the best way to go about that. I'd be super excited to be able to have an rgb and refurbished one so I could try these games without fear of it breaking down quickly. I do have a PB dump of some pictures I took of my area, it's not fully done yet obviously but it's still pretty fun to be in there. I actually just gone done playing Turrican for the first time but it bent me over pretty bad, fun though.

It's important to note that as far as collecting goes, I only collect things i'd have interest to play which is why some systems have limited amounts, I don't buy bad or sealed games, or things that are valuable just because. Value of a game just makes them prohibitive to buy rather than make me feel good about owning it.  I simply like having access to any kind of game i'd feel like playing, which is why I focused most of my area to being more for play and only some for display. I have a thing for authentic hardware and games though, so not a big fan of emulation.

I don't think there is anything wrong with collecting, though it's true i'll never beat them all (i'll be dead well before then) I have beaten a good amount of them i'd say. Really, I would guess the average person here has well over 50 games for their Turbo/PCE, so if you apply that liking to all consoles, it's actually not that high of a figure in the end.

It's not something i'd be ashamed of though, most consoles have amazing games to play, not just one, I'd like to see what they all have to offer though, which is why i'm here. I do intend to invest a lot of time into the TG-16 because it feels like a lost piece of the golden era to me, I consider the 16 bit era the best generation and somehow I missed this one entirely as a kid. Will be exciting to try and beat a lot of them once I can get it off RF signal.
