I have to disagree with you too este - the 1 controller port was, and arguably even still is - a major fault.  NES also had 2 controller ports, TG16 just one, another step backwards.

And in the late 80s and early 90s, most of us had no other way to hook up our consoles except RF.  I agree it was also a drawback but only for a very small percentage of gamers back then.

RF + AV out should have been supported :)

Yeah, I guess 2 controller ports would have been better for many/most people. :)

I was always going to get the TurboTap to play with brothers/friends, since we would never have settled for 2-player Dungeon Explorer, Bomberman, MotoRoader, etc. Yeah, we played the TV SPORTS games, too...but not too much Basketball.

I never bought a TG-16, but the single port didn't bother me at all when I bought the Duo back in the day.  Besides, if it had two ports from day one, the five player tap likely wouldn't have been as well supported as it was.

I do remember feeling nickel and dimed to death with the turbo. Having to buy the tap and an extra controller just to play two players sucked. And to get AV and storage you had to buy the booster. It was a bit much. Especially being a kid with no income.

I remember thinking damn this is supposed to be so much better than the NES, but it has two ports, AV out, carts with save storage, and two controllers. WTH!

Calling it a "step backwards" is pretty extreme considering the dramatic increase in quality across the board. Also Turbo games were cheaper than NES and Genesis games. So buying a 2-player game + extra pad on NES/Genesis was that much closer to buying a 2-player TurboChip + Pad + Tap.

The TG-16 also launched 4 years later at the same retail price of a base NES. So factoring in inflation, you paid much more for an NES.

Even ingnoring the PCE, look how well the TurboTap was supported in North America. How well proportionately was R.O.B. or the Power Pad or the Four Score supported?

sometime i just want to put a hockey mask and use a huge 2x4 and kill'em all..

Hockey masks get a bad rap :(

I think they're easily the sexiest thing in sports. A beautiful marrage of function and style, don't get me started on hockey gear.

I know precisely 0 people in real life that have knowledge of NEC gaming. That said I had no clue at the time. I used to get video game magazines all the time in the early 90s and I cannot remember reading about it at all. I can recall reading import sections tho. My first experience was via the Wii. Neutopia and drac x. I almost cried at what I'd been missing.

"I only know about _____, and therefore feel uncomfortable/apathetic towards everything else. I am not particularly interested to learn more about ______ because apathy/brain hurts."

I'm now genuinely curious which this forum hates worse.

(1) Turbografx? Looks lame. I don't care to learn about it.

(2) Turbografx? I learned about it yesterday! I want to get ALL THE GAMES! Cardboard boxes too!

You forgot option 3: DarkKobold.

Meh, 3 out of 10, for effort. Otherwise, too easy.
Hey, you.

Slightly off topic, but what are the notably good multiplayer games for the TG-16 besides the obvious Bomberman?

IN no particular order besides bomberman and bomberman 93, I like the following Multiplayer games

Military Madness
Dungeon Explorer
Buster Brothers
Parasol Stars
Aero Blasters
CHew Man Fu
HIt the ICe
Takin it to the hoop
fighting street
Bonk 3

And A personal favorite of mine = Battle Royal

Of course this only includes NA releases, there were quite a few release that were japan exclusive that also rank high on my list like kickball.
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)

BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere.

You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

I have noticed that people who didn't have a TG16 when they were younger tend to not like it as much.

It's weird I have a mix. Most of my irl friends like Majors already know that turbo is where it's at. Those friends were the ones that showed me the turbo years ago when I only had an NES, SNES, and Genesis as a kid. (well technically I had an Odyssey 2 and Atari 2600 first, but still)
It was like an awesome treasure trove of untapped awesomeness I'm still discovering. Even with the nostalgia factor for my old systems it seems weird to me that anyone with half a brain would snub the turbo.....

However, most of the people I've run into on gaming forums and social media are younger and they are all Nintendtards that think the N64 is a retro system, and don't really play anything older. Their mentality can be a little tiring.

not 100% of them. but i agree, some of them are just not willing to accept that its a great console dispite some flaws.

I agree that the single controller port is a legitimate flaw, as is the lack of AV out without the TurboBooster. I mean, even the PC-FX, which is way more focused on solo-gaming, has two ports. Stuff like that is why I see the N64 as a superior multiplayer gaming machine than, say, the PS1. Having those ports built in is really convenient.

I'm totally mystified by people who would take the form of the games as meaning that the games are worse than bulky carts, though. Outside of like Neo Geo, games have, for the most part, only gotten smaller and smaller as they got more technologically advanced. Especially now that they're on cards again, with the DS, 3DS, and Vita, and only getting tinier and tinier, you'd think people would see HuCards as a good thing. And who the hell wants stuff that takes up a ton of room? I love how little space my loose HuCards take up. When I then consider how much space my loose NES carts consume, it's just depressing. At the very least, I wish they were the size of Famicom carts instead of being half empty space for no good reason at all.
