Over at 4chan on /vr/ it's full of people who are just discovering and idolizing the TG-16/PCE.  It scares me because I worry about prices going up, games getting more scarce..  I liked it better back in the day when my friends made fun of me for having the "loser" system.  It was like being in on a secret, though, especially when Dracula X came out in 93 and everybody was mad jealous.

But yeah, about the controller port thing. I had a tap for the TG-16, but when my console stopped working, I got a duo.  Of course they decided to change to mini-din then, so it seemed like all my old accessories just had to be rebought.  Since I was a kid, I didn't realize you could get converters, so I think I just got rid of my pads, stick and tap somehow (not the only dumb move I made) and I never did get a duo tap.  I do want to get one in the future though but I was pretty content playing 1p games.

I thought I remember reading there was a problem just using a straight up converter cable with multitaps.  Is that right?  Like, you can convert a cable from normal to mini in each individual port of the tap, but if you try to just put the converter before the tap (so you just have to use one converter compared to 5 if you were converting each individual controller on the tap) then there are registry issues.  I thought I saw a thread here that addressed that recently.  It's something I think about considering I'd like to move to a Duo setup sometime in the future.

Maybe a better question, too, is why the hell the TG-16 changed up the port compared to the PC Engine in the first place?
I'm a notorious strange man.

That's probably true, I was just guessing you could use them with an adapter.  They should have stuck with one kind (size) of port or the other though.  Well, I hope it's not too hard to hunt down a Duotap when I'm ready.  Not sure what imagine playing on it, my friends aren't into older games as much as I am, and one of them has told me he outright hates bomberman.  Some Dungeon Explorer is definitely on my list though, especially if I can get the infamous DE2 one of these days.

Good question.

I think it is like the silly region-restrictions on software/media/DVD:

To ensure hardware sales of NA peripherals, small changes (mini-DIN to DIN) so second-hand/discounted/3rd party/cloned PCE stuff isn't sold by enterprising entrepreneurs in NA.

So, $$$$.

And its just stoopid what people are asking for (what should be) $10 turbo sticks.

I agree that the single controller port is a legitimate flaw, as is the lack of AV out without the TurboBooster. I mean, even the PC-FX, which is way more focused on solo-gaming, has two ports. Stuff like that is why I see the N64 as a superior multiplayer gaming machine than, say, the PS1. Having those ports built in is really convenient.

I'm totally mystified by people who would take the form of the games as meaning that the games are worse than bulky carts, though. Outside of like Neo Geo, games have, for the most part, only gotten smaller and smaller as they got more technologically advanced. Especially now that they're on cards again, with the DS, 3DS, and Vita, and only getting tinier and tinier, you'd think people would see HuCards as a good thing. And who the hell wants stuff that takes up a ton of room? I love how little space my loose HuCards take up. When I then consider how much space my loose NES carts consume, it's just depressing. At the very least, I wish they were the size of Famicom carts instead of being half empty space for no good reason at all.

I agree, I love the small form factor of hucards.  CD cases are a nice perfect size for them too, even better than the DVD sized cases for the Sega Cards.
