I really dig PCE DD2.  My only knock on it is that when punches/kicks connect they don't provide the same satisfaction that I get from the arcade and some of the home ports. Can't put my finger on what it is, might be the way the characters animate when they get hit.

Also, would have been nice if they would have worked the Ninja, Right Arm, Abobo and Williams into the game.  Their sprites are available in the hidden sprite viewer.

Ah... Double Doragon 2.  Great game.  Wasn't too sure about it the first time I played it, but once I really figured out the game, I loved it.  I really like the alternate endings (not a lot of that back then).  It's probably my favorite beat'emup on the system (not saying much here)

BTW - the music on mission 6 is legit

Honestly I just liked the Nes one a lot more, especially the music on it, though the arcade and Mega Drive versions are my fav ones as far as pt 2 goes. I wasn't keen on the over all look or sound of the music on the PCE port, not that I think it is bad. I have Return of Double Dragon for SFC also, and I mean it just stomps all over PCE Double Dragon 2. Way more moves in that game, and the enemies put up a better fight. That and the soundtrack just kicks so much ass. Speaking of Double Dragon, the Famicom copy of pt3 should arrive to me today in the mail. Tracking shows it is out for delivery. :)

Last time I tried playing DDII, I found it hard to get back into. I always felt like I wanted to play a better beat em up instead. I think I ended up getting rid of the whole trilogy on the NES a few years back. Only slightly kicking myself now for it.

Got to Egypt on my first try this evening, so that at least has to count for something. :P What screwed me up there was the first two guys that appear. They pretty much run at you and attack as soon as the screen comes up. Didn't have time to prepare for it, so I got cornered and lost Billy right off the bat. Now I know what to expect for next time.

No, not even close. The pce game is more like a remake of the NES game. That's fine, as it was better than the arcade game anyway.

Pretty much this, PCE DDII is an up port of the nes conversion, which isn't a bad thing AT ALL...

Double Dragon 2 on the arcade was the pinnacle of fighting games 1998  (prior final fight which came out a year later, which surpass this game), the point being that they change the fighting system to make it more challenging than the relatively easy prequel thus quite of depth of the game

more variety of enemies and that it suffered slowdowns as the hardware struggled to cope with the scale/complexity of this game

IMO, on the Gameboy advance remake/improvement surpass which was released 14-15 years after the dd 2 arcade release, neither the pc engine, nes, pitiful megadrive or the technical advanced, but boring snes dd could match dd2 on the arcade.

in fact, the recent release of DD trilogy on android  ( which I use ps3 dual shock 3 and dedicated clip) and iphone made me constant replays on dd2 especially as they perfected it by eliminated the slowdowns and even more fun than the us made ps3/x360 dd neon

I have only played the PC Engine version of Double Dragon 2, so I have nothing else to compare it to. But for what it is, it's a fun game. The AI puts up a good fight as they are resourceful and always pick up weapons lying around. But they are not overly cheap like in some other beat em ups. I find the difficulty of the game to be just right. The game plays nicely in 2-player mode. If you can find it for a reasonable price, I recommend it.
SignofZeta: What a quintessentially PCEFX thread. Someone complains about nothing, multiple Bible-length posts discussing who's a bigger a$$hole follow. You're both pretty big a$$holes. Let's call it a tie.

So many classic beat-em-ups came out in 1998. Great year.
