What are some good CD games?
« on: August 26, 2015, 03:44:18 PM »
I've mostly exhausted the HuCard library, except a bunch of shooters. I'm starting to get into the cd library other than the incredible Rondo of Blood.

I'm not an expert on CD games, can somebody tell me more?

Ones I've played besides Rondo

Kaze Kiri: fantastic, a true AAA classic
River City Ransom: better than the original, another A class game
Valis II: bad
Valis III: eh, am I missing something?
Valis I: good remake, seems decent
Chiki Chiki Boys: fun like the Genny one, a lot easier

I'm going to play Ys IV at some point (thanks Nightwolve).

There are dozens of threads covering this, as we get new members asking this once every week or two.

There are literally hundreds of good CD games, but if you go into detail about your specific tastes and Japanese threshold, we can make some legitimate recommendations. Otherwise, I'd recommend about 30 Japanese RPGs to start.

I like action type platformers and shooters on the easier side.

My Japanese is non-existent. I like action RPGs, turn based RPGs not as much.

If there are some excellent action adventure games then I would like to know. On HuCard I enjoyed Neutopia, Dungeon explorer, city hunter and sonson II.

Some of my favorite HuCards are Legendary Axe, New Adventure Island, Parasol Stars, Super Dodgeball, Salamander,  Mr Heli, Legend of Tonma, and Bomberman 94.

Try Gradius 2, Dracula X, DE 2 (lots of numbers so far), Super Buster Bros, Ys 1-4.

Like Black Tiger said, there are many threads in this forum dedicated to this question, but I'll throw out a few that I like which may suit you.

Action type platformers

Bazaru De Gozaru - not a platformer, but this puzzle game's cute monkey does jump from platform to platform in many stages.  O:)
Doraemon - Nobita's Dorabian Night - had both a HuCard and a CD release
Fausette Amour
Gotzendeiner - not a platformer.  It's an action/adventure.
Horror Story - a forced scrolling run-'n-gun platformer
Iga Minden Gao
Mystic Formula - not a platformer. It's an overhead run-'n-gun.
Renny Blaster - not really worth it's expensive price tag. :(  but it is worth a playthrough

Shoot-'em-ups

Avenger
Cho Aniki - if your mind can handle the weird graphics and music, then is is a fine game
God Panic
Hellfire S
L-Dis
Macros 2036
Nexzr - not easy per se, but it has unlimited continues   :-"
Sapphire - a must-play shoot-'em-up, although it requires the Arcade Card
Spriggan Mark 2
Star Parodier
Steam Heart's - has hentai cut-scenes which can be skipped, but the game itself is actually good.
Super Raiden
Sylphia
Zero Wing - not easy, and may be unbeatable for those lacking skills (like me), but still a great game for the 8 (out of 10) levels that I can play

It's on PS1 and PSP, too. I just wasn't thinking when I hurriedly typed up the list.

Yes, but is PS1 a port of the arcade Gradius 2?

I should have remembered that due to its brevity.
