Neutopia II thread
« on: September 06, 2015, 03:47:37 PM »
There hasn't been a single thread for Neutopia II ever, so I guess this is it.

Now having experienced both Neutopia games, I can say with confidence that this one is better.

Despite all the block puzzles, still a very good game.

Post any thoughts on the games here.

Since I came to know these games much later in life every time I see the word Futurama's Neutopia is the first thing to come to mind.

Neutopia = Neutered Utopia.

I have personally yet to play the second one, but very excited to dig into it after a few others.
Switchzx's amazing quote -
"I was starting with the hardest to get games first. I realized I was never going to get Magical Chase so gave up on it all, sold up and got out."

Blueraven's quote - "it begins."

I haven't played through the 2nd one in it's entirety but I loved the first one.

Both games are great.  Both games also have wildly different musical styles, but I love them both.

A little little-known trivia for NeutII:  If you enter "KOALA" as your name, you'll be a really ugly girl (but get bonus potions).

Also, passwords: "Music_From_Neutopia___ (etc)" gives you a sound test.
"Thats_Entertainment_Neutopia___ (etc)" gives you an enemy viewer.

Moving diagonally is such a huge improvement over the first one.  Movement being improved as much really makes me enjoy the game more.

I've only ever played the game on emulator as I didn't pick up Neutopia 2 when it was released even though I'd enjoyed the original.  I really wish I'd purchased this one back in the day as now it's prohibitively expensive.

Any passwords like those for the first Neutopia?

Neutopia and Neutopia II are some of my favorite Turbo games. I got the first one after I bought Bonk and returned to because I beat it in a day.

Both games are great.  The second game does have much better controls but I think I like the story of the first a bit more.  The ending to Neutopia II is definitely such a tease.  I was hoping a 3rd game would have added some challenge to acquiring items.  That was maybe my only complaint with these games is they were a bit predictable and pretty easy to complete.  Adding a bit more challenging puzzles would have taken them over the top.

They're both a lot of good fun, but part II is better in most every way (longer, diagonal movement, and nicer looking).

Agreed, the sequel is a much better game.  Sadly, even now neither one gets the attention they deserve.  They are both in my Turbo Top 5.

As folks have been saying, both games are great.

I don't know if I prefer one over the other...

For me it's a wash between the two games, although for nostalgic reasons I like the first game a tad bit more (it was one of the first games I had as a kid). The second game makes some improvements as others have mentioned (8 directions, multiple staffs, more stuff to do), but the first game excels in other ways. I think the writing in the first game is much better (Old Wise Mother and Dirth are poetically formulaic), which pulls me in a bit more. The characters is the second game aren't very memorable. I also like the look of the first game a bit more. The second game is a bit cartoony. And, I'm sure others will disagree, but I like the music in the first game better. The crypt music in the second game isn't very good, although the lava level music really stands out. Dirth's theme in the first game is awesome, some of the best hucard music. So I like the feel and presentation of the first game, while the game play is slightly better in the second. But I'm mostly nitpicking. Can't go wrong with either game.

I agree about the nostalgia and music of Neutopia 1... it is generally more awesome than Neut 2.  However, the 2nd sphere and labyrinth tunes of Neut 1 can't hold a candle to anything in Neut 2.  Neutopia 2's labyrinth music is actually really, really fantastic, layering in its melodies without ever feeling repetitive.
