Valkyrie no Densetsu/Legend of Valkyrie thread
« on: September 12, 2015, 12:52:05 PM »
I didn't see this one mentioned a lot when I was looking into buying it but now that I have played it I figure it deserves its own thread. This was an instant favorite for me when I received it a few weeks ago and I finally beat it the other day and then a couple of times after. What a find! It's a fairly simple top down adventure game that you can play through in around an hour. The action is, for the most part, well paced but you have to kind of take it slow on later levels or you may find yourself a bit overwhelmed by all of the characters on screen. It's also proven to be a game with some pretty good replay value for me, even when you put aside the fact that there are side quests and multiple paths through the levels. The only part I find tedious is the battle with the final bosses but that is only really if I'm running out of weapons when I get to them. I have pages of passwords that I wrote down but I've never used a single one because the game is fun enough for me to start from the beginning every time I play.
The game is pretty playable without knowing how to read Japanese but since I liked it so much and since the game is a little more expansive than I expected I find myself at a loss since there is a lot I'd like to know about the game and there is not much info about it aside from very general overviews and gameplay videos.
Anyway, post your thoughts and/or maybe any and all info about the game you'd care to share if you have played it, especially if you understand Japanese. I was specifically wondering about:

 - How many different outfits are there in the game? I've found 3 (purple (lava won't hurt you), pink (I think this makes a woman who gives you a spell appear...), and red (invincibility))

 - I assume not but is there any way to use a different weapon other than running out of the one you are currently using?

 - What are the side quest items (bottom row of inventory/pause screen) and how many are there? I know there is a red and a blue sack that you need to get an outfit and I've collected a few other things but I don't know what they are, how I got them, or what they're for.

 - How many spells are there? I've collected 5 and the manual shows 5, but the screen makes it look like there are 1 or 2 more.

 - At the end of the game how do you get different characters/icons to appear on the screen? See the high score thread for an example. OP there has like 3 of them but I have only 1 in mine and the next time I played the game I did everything I did the first time and then a bunch of other stuff resulting in more items, a higher score, more gold, and even somehow beating the game slightly faster but when I got to this screen I didn't even have the bird thing this time.

 - Does the Select button ever do anything? It never seems to and I figure the manual just says "Not used." or something on the page of the manual that defines what the buttons do, but I can't read it.

 - Does the question asked at the beginning of level 4 change or does the order of the responses change? I write down the responses as I give them and the correct response I've written down for most questions always work for all except this one...

Not looking for specific instructions on the questions above or anything, just some general info to point me in the right direction. I had some notes that I took about secret or harder to get items and I was going to include them but then I thought that discussing specifics like this might ruin the game for some and figured maybe it was best to leave them out. I also beat this game, which probably means that it is not very hard because I don't beat many games. :]

I definitely recommend it, it's a lot of fun regardless of whether you choose to be as obsessive about it as I seem to be.

...added another question to the original post. :]

There are a few instances where you are ask to select (a) (b) (c) answers in order to get upgrades or advance your journey. So perhaps some knowledge of japanese language might help.

You might need to get the final sword upgrade to beat the final boss quickly which usually takes a few minute otherwise it will take a long time.  I think the only puzzle I was unable to solve was the picture puzzle ones which require you to move pictures around in a square grid but within a time limit.  I've only ever encountered this once so I don't remember where I found it.

It's a big favorite of mine too.

I haven't played it in a while since getting a CD rom add on.  But I find it takes several hours to complete the game especially if you want to  explore more of that world of valkyrie

There is a hidden cheat option in the in game which allows you to listen to all the music of the game.  Something which I also really enjoy.

Thanks for the info. With the questions it is just trial and error for me but I've got a good list of responses that seem to always work for most of them. When you say that answers will advance your journey do you mean that depending on what you select for some of them new areas of the level might open up? I've played that puzzle game, it's at the end of level 6 and if you don't select the response that brings you to it or the one that brings you to another game then you will wind up back at the beginning of the level. I usually go for the other game though because I am terrible at those puzzles.
That is another thing I like, some of the songs on the soundtrack are pretty good and I listen to them often.

I have this game on one of the Playstation Namco Museum discs, so I don't play the PCE version that often.  It is a cheerful, bright game with fabulous music.  And cool scaling/rotation in the arcade/PSX versions.

The translated arcade version on that Namco Museum disc makes me wish I had gotten myself a Playstation, the arcade soundtrack is even better than the PCE version too!

So I just beat this again with 266890 points and on the end screen I had a character that I never got before even though I didn't do anything different this time around. Maybe what you see on that screen is just based on score and not anything else you did while playing the game?

edit: Actually, one thing I did do differently was not get the pink outfit in the dungeon in level 4. I was trying to see if it was what made the old woman appear in the room with the frogs (it isn't, I think she just appears if you go in). Now I'm also wondering what this outfit does besides cost 3000 gold because the only way out of the dungeon is to go to the old woman and you can buy this right before her, but you lose it when you leave the dungeon.

Yeah, Legend of Valkyrie is definitely a pretty great game.  It might be my favorite of the system's somewhat thin lineup of topdown run & guns.  I don't have the PS1 collection version though, only the PCE game... it'd be great to get Namco Museum Vol. 5 and play the arcade game in English, but if I can only have one version I'd rather have this one, I like the TG16 a lot more than the PS1. :)

If I could justify the cost of a PS1 and the Namco Museum 5 disc then I'd buy it, but I'm happy enough to stick with the PCE version too.
Was doing some searching and found a guide and walkthrough for the arcade version: http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Valkyrie_no_Densetsu/Getting_Started . I haven't had much of a chance to look at it once so I don't know how much is relevant to the PCE version, but at a quick glance it does appear to answer my question about the question in the 4th level!

Really nice sprites.  Surprised this wasn't on a short list to get released in the USA.

Here's a sneak preview of the US cover:

This is a really fun game. I was playing it around a month ago. I got to the boss that shoots energy through the floor. I don't remember what level that is. I haven't played it since i lost to that boss. Need to pick it back up and finish it off

That's level 4; only 3 more levels to go! A lot of times that boss can't hit you with the floor attack if you're far enough away, but not always.
