For 2015 here's a part 2 to "Collecting PC-Engine in the early 90s in the UK"

Click on the below small thumbnail images for the larger images.

Below are photos from CVG issue 137, April 1993. Unfortunately I had to take photos as each magazine page is too big to be scanned on my scanner which scans up to a maximum A4 standard size paper.

Below Solder Blade review scan are from GO!, which was a small handheld games magazine that came inside CVG magazine.

Whilst pulling out this magazine to scan, inside the mag I found this old price list from Telegames. You used to have call them up and they'd mail you out a price list. Not sure what year it's from.

Do you have the issue of cvg with the street fighter 2 review. I don't know if it was the copy i had but i remember the screen shots were a messed up color. It was the only screen shots i saw of the game so i thought it was a terrible port of the game lol.

Fascinating. I used to buy cvg all the time but to this day cannot remember ever reading about PCE stuff. I guess I just used to gloss over it. I remember reading avidly about Amiga stuff and imagining I had one.

Yeah I have the Street Fighter II review CVG issue. It was quite common in those days in magazines to mess up the screen shots.

CVG never covered PCE in a big way, but there are some reviews. Most issues in 1990-91 had one or two PCE reviews. And from 1988-92 most issues had a PCE mention somewhere within the magazine.

The Mean Machines section of CVG split off into it's own magazine. A mag that was 100% dedicated to consoles.
Before the Mean Machines mag launched they released four volumes of the "Complete Guide to Consoles" which covered a lot of PC Engine. I own all four but as far as I'm aware they can be pretty pricey to pick up these days, I think they sell for upwards of £20 each. I googled and found this video of someone looking through the first three volumes
.
Julian Rignall the editor of CVG and Mean Machines I always thought was a legend, he was a real character and known for sporting a wicked nineties mullet. But I read somewhere Sunteam_Paul doesn't like him as he swindled him when Paul sent some tips and Rignall printed them in the mag without crediting him. The guys from the Electric Brain fanzine seemed to also not like Rignall for some reason.
After the Complete Guides when the proper Mean Machines magazine launched they completely dropped the PCE coverage.

I loved CVG. I remember the Soldier Blade review issue and the Go meta-magazine in the middle of the magazine...I remember them doing a feature on the new consoles (MD, SFC, PCE) and I remember seeing images of Dragon Slayer for the first time and wanting to play it.
My favourite pigeon had a fatal run-in with a cloud...

Not from the early 90s but I have some scans somewhere from an issue of Edge from 2004 (?) that had a 6 page feature on PC Engine. I'll try and dig it out.

Was that from Edge Retro by any chance? I was trying to scan that as well but it the pages were too big for my scanner.

It was from a regular issue of Edge but I guess it may be in Retro too assuming that it's a compilation of articles...?

Actually I think they're different articles, the PC Engine part from the Edge Retro was around 12 pages long.

So is the one I have....well, I thought I had scanned it over summer but apparently I just took photos with my iPhone. I'll upload em but they're a bit crap. I'll be home over Xmas so I'll do a proper scan then.
