Which Turbo/PC Engine CD setup should I get?
« on: November 03, 2015, 08:03:31 AM »
I'm in the U.S., using a CRT TV, with NO plans to buy a TV that supports SCART. I have a Turbo Everdrive V1 and a CoreGrafx, and NO HuCards or official Turbo/PC Engine CD games. I want to buy a Turbo or PC Engine CD that's refurbished with a lens, new caps, etc. I ONLY want to play games using my Turbo Everdrive and burned Japanese and U.S. CD games -- no original HuCards or CD games. I'm happy to sell my CoreGrafx and buy a Doujindance Duo or Duo-R, but is that my cheapest and best option?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

IMO the cheapest and best would be a re-capped PC Engine DUO with a new lens.

Why the (and no plans to buy any) qualifier?

That said A Duo-R(x) is your most reliable bet

Selling your CG and buying a Duo (any version if recapped) is probably the cheapest route.  A beefcase add-on might be about the same or even bit cheaper, but probably more expensive when you factor in the cost of a Super CD syscard and the differential between a Arcade Card Duo and Pro.

Can someone please point me in the direction of someone who sells such systems? Is Doujindance on eBay the best bet, even though I don't need some of the mods those systems have? Do I need the region-mod, or can all CD games play on all systems regardless of the region? In addition, I need to make sure that my Turbo Everdrive will work correctly, as Krikzz himself says in the link below that a region mod needs to be high quality in order for the Everdrive to work properly. Thanks.

Members turbokon and keith often have systems for sale, and CDs are region free.

If you're just using the Everdrive you don't need a region mod. Cds are region free, and you've stated you don't want to buy and hucards.

So if I decide to go with a Doujindance model, I can plug it right into my CRT through the regular red, yellow, and white jacks?

Yes, but the main reason to get one from Doujindance is because he rgb mods them. You won't be playing in rgb so you'd be paying extra for a feature you won't be using.

I would go for a Duo-r.
If you need to re cap in the future, all caps are wire legged.
replacement laser is cheap $20.
Less hassle than a duo would give you.

Hmmm, I have a doujindance Duo R. Bought it as my first system and the s-video (installed later on) and the basic composite on it work great. Has a region switch too. I was hoping the RGB would work for when that time came, but sadly that isn't getting the job done and it's not working properly.

BUT since you said you are looking to play a Duo R without RGB, this may not be a bad idea for me. Would you be interested in my Duo R? The laser was just recently changed and works great. Has the box with it too. Then I could use that money to get a better RGB modded PCE. I love the Duo R look, but I'd rather be playing in RGB :)

Sorry, half of this was for you and half of this was me thinking out loud, lol.

Is the recapping supposed to last indefinitely, or will it eventually become a problem? Just curious if it's worth it for me to explore a used recapped one.

How much are you looking to get, and where are you located?
