Best baseball game
« on: August 23, 2006, 05:03:35 PM »
With the exception of Blades of Steel, i'm not much into sports games.  But i do enjoy some baseball once in a blue moon and Reggie Jackson Baseball on my SMS is starting to wear a little thin after these last 17 years.

What is the best baseball game on the pce/tg16?  Other than a little World Class Baseball i haven't played any of them.

The other Power League games (Japanese version of World Class Baseball) are pretty much the same, so they are all good. There are a few for CD that I have never played but look like a lotta fun too. Also the two Namco ones for PCE huCard are pretty basic, I think they are called World Class Stadium and World Class Stadium '91 (jeez I own it, I should know).

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

This is Pro Baseball 89 was an awesome CD Baseball game that I imported. We figured out all of the menus and wrote everthing out.

It had all of the real teams, players and stadiums for that year. It plays very well too.

The best baseball game ever made, which probably will never be bettered, is Major League Baseball for Intellivision.

Aside from other greatness, the one feature that keeps it on top is the fact that each fielder has it's own button.

The worst thing to ever happen to sports games is licensing. Ever since sports games started using real teams and even worse, real players, gameplay has no longer been the highest priority.

And ever since they began licensing teams & players, publishers have somehow managed to con people into buying the exact same game again and again every single year, with only stats and other minor changes.

Meanwhile, game mags and even thousands+ of self-proclamed "gamerz" have been trashing games like Bonk 2 & 3 as rehashes and everyone dumped on Super Street Fighter II SNES as a Capcom rip-off(somehow, they all loved SFII Turbo though...) ever since.

In this emerging age of "micro transactions", how can any publisher justify making gamerz pay full price for next years revision instead of downloading a patch for free or like $5?

Right on, man; right on! Fantastic baseball game right there. It's amazing, I find the Atari 2600 to have the best tennis, football, and soccer games out of any systems. Tennis for 2600 is probably my favorite sports game of all time, fanastic game (especially with paddles).

I think the only baseball game I've played for PCE is ROM ROM Stadium. It remember it being OK, but I don't own it anymore so I must not have been too crazy about it.

I totally agree about licensing ruining sports games. Well, obviously it really makes the game for the millions of tools that buy the same damn game every single year, but licensing ruins it for me. My favorite baseball games are Super Baseball 2020, and Dynamite Sluggaer.

The PCE baseball titles can't compare with those for the NES:

Baseball Stars for the NES will always be my favorite baseball game of all-time. I just love the control -- it's spot-on, as far as I am concerned. Plus, it looks fantastic, has tons of customization, plays quickly and is so much damn fun to play. It rules.

Baseball Simulator 1.000 (decent runner-up) is another NES game that rocks the pants off of countless 16-bit (+) baseball titles, though I never thought it was nearly as fun as Baseball Stars.

There are quite a few baseball games for NES I loved besides Baseball Stars, though I have no idea what the names are (I would have to look through a list to find them). I remember this one neat game where you chose teams with all these crazy, creative kid designs and would play in some funny parks.

Well heck, I guess that says something about the quality of the PCE's baseball games when, after a handful of posts, the thread degrades into discussion about ancient NES carts and the highlights of Tennis on the Atari 2600.

I personally don't think so, I think the PCE is one of the better systems for baseball games since there are a little more than a handful worth and they are all pretty decent games. I recently got World Class Baseball and have been playing it with my bros and loving it to death, such a great game. I might even go as far as saying that World Class Baseball is my new favorite baseball game :o . So if you were to ask me, I'd say the NES and PCE are the top consoles for baseball games (and I still haven't played any of the PCE CD baseball games).

Yes, licensing along with a heavy emphasis on "realism" and TV-style presentation have ruined baseball video games. Baseball is one of my favorite sports, but I don't give a shit about having real ML players, teams, stadiums, and such. I just want to play a good game of baseball. Fantasy style baseball, either with over-the-top arcade action, or elements like robot players are cool too.

The only baseball games I've played on the Turbo have been the Power League series. World Class Baseball remains one of my favorite games, even though the later Power League updates are better. I put so much time into World Class back in the day, it's ridiculous. BTW, I wonder whatever happened to TV Sports Baseball? I probably wouldn't have liked it much (the TV style again), and I wasn't too impressed with how TV Sports Football played, but we really didn't get enough localized baseball games. I think Tengen was rumored to be developing RBI Baseball for the Turbo too at one point (or rather translating and publishing Pro Yakyu World Stadium).

I was never big on the 'realistic' sports games for any system, but one game I did enjoy was Base Wars for the NES. In certain situations, your robots would fight each other to determine the outcomes of certain things (like wether you got to base)

Not on youtube, sadly. :/

TV Sports Baseball got cancelled, I don't know if there is an answer for that out there, but we have discussed this multiple times before. There were some screenshots for it and even a video of it if you check out the promo video that Joe posted here . Paranoia Dragon knows a lot more about this than I do, but I think I recall him or someone else saying that some store was going to have it in stock, but they never received any copies. There might be a proto copy out there somewhere, but we don't know of any. From the looks of the video, it looked a lot better than the other TV Sports games and was more like a classic style baseball game like Power League.
