I've been curious to know how all of you go about considering games you've beaten officially cleared/finished/beaten/etc.
-Do you use continues or only go for a 1cc for an actual clear?
Use continues within what the game provides stock. If I have to use a code of some type I don't consider it a real "clear".
-Do you only use the number of continues that the game allots you?
Yep.
-Shooters must be 1cc'ed but platformers can use continues? Vise versa?
-Certain shooters/platformers get exceptions and can use continues? (e.g. Tatsujin, Rayxanber, Browning)
The same rules apply regardless of genre.
-Play default difficult then ramp it up later? Start at highest difficulty?
Usually I start at default. I may go higher or lower depending on the game.
-Only play the first level for your "review" of the game?
That's ridiculous. You don't see much of the game that way.
-Stare at your shelf-candy and don't play them in fear of ruining their value?
I play my games. Though obviously some get played a heck of a lot more than others.
For some reason, shooters I don't consider it a cleared unless I 1cc it. Null always said he uses continues as practice for later stages and for practicing a real run. I've stuck to that. Yet platformers I use continues, especially Browning because it's so goddamn hard and cheap sometimes.
I'm not trying to say so-and-so didn't clear the game because they used continues; I'm just genuinely curious to see if you push yourself purposefully or just want to see those credits roll no matter what.
I think continues are fine if the game allows it. If I like a game enough to want to work through the game at a higher difficulty level or whatever else to add challenge I might try to 1CC it, play without continues, etc. Otherwise I play with the default options set.
