December 5 - December 11 : Atlantean
---------------------------------------------------------------------

(chosen by jtucci31)

The homebrew HuCard game for our beloved 16-bit machines. Whether you know that it’s a homebrew game, understand the concept of Defender-style games, or have only ever played Resogun for your YouTube channel, you’re sure to find some joy in playing this 4-stage underwater adventure.

Take control of the brave warrior as you try to defeat the Aquanoids and save the Atlanteans! The non-stop action will task you with protecting the Atlanteans. Saving Atlantis, though, is your primary mission. Towards the end of each stage you will be challenged with navigating through fields of mines. Once you make it through you’ll come face-to-face with a boss that’s sure to make you shit the tub you’re hopefully playing Atlantean in (it’s the best way to play).

Using the turbo switches may aid you, but here you will rely on your ability to maneuver through oncoming attacks while simultaneously attacking and defending. I know when I first started playing I was terrible. My poor little guy would drown within seconds of me starting the game. It takes a while to get used to the feel of the game. The thing that helped me was playing Santalantean as it was all just strictly shooty-shoots. I would suggest trying that if you’re having trouble (or the endurance mode if you have Atlantean and there is an endurance mode, which I think there is). From there you can get a feel for weaving in and out of a swarm of bullets and making sure that no Atlantean gets left behind.

Once you get going and start taking down the oncoming enemies with ease, it allows you to enjoy that rocking soundtrack even more. The title screen always gets me a little pumped when I start it up and get ready for some underwater action.

So for those of you with that blue homemade HuCard sitting on your shelf, pull your TV and Turbo up to your bathtub, hop in, pop the game in, and starting blasting away! Or for those of you with a Turbo Express, bring it to your public pool and impress all the local kids. Don’t worry, the Atlantean HuCard is entirely waterproof*. Put up some more high scores in the dedicated thread while you’re at it too.

*HuCard is not actually waterproof

I haven't played in a bit so this will give me the excuse.  I'll post a score or two after I get home; I hope some others will play along too.

This game was a really nice refresh to the TG16 lineup.

Before I had my copy in hand I was playing santatlantean like mad in an emulator. Then when I did get this game I popped it in my console and was surprised how much harder, faster, it was compared to the emulated game above.

If I have time I will sit down on it for a while but it's getting pretty busy with the holidays right now for me. This game is on my short list to stream on twitch and then upload everything to youtube. There just isn't enough video's of people's gameplay on it yet.

This is the best aetherbytegame, Insanity was good only because it was a clone of Berzerk. Pyramid Plunder was meh. But this game is great in all departments. Outstanding hucard game!
I shamefully haven't passed the first boss yet. A good reminder for me to stop being a pussy and "beat" the game already (loops or credit roll I don't care).

Brought to you by a guy with shitty opinions about videogames so don't be mad at me Arkhan

I'm, uh, bad at this game.  I'll have a score that I'm not ashamed of before this week is over, I'm sure, but right now still too terrible to post

I was never particularly good at Defender either so perhaps my opinion here in invalid but whatever.  I think Atlantean is a pretty good port of it.  From a technical standpoint, it really looks great on the Turbo.  The multiple scrolling layers show some wizardry used between line scrolling and sprites used on the background.  There are tons of objects flying around most of the time, and it's fast paced and exciting.  The soundtrack is perhaps my favorite part.  I was super happy when I got my copy of the game and I play it every so often; I just wish I didn't suck so much.

Either way, I still haven't bought Pyramid Plunder so I can't comment on that.  I like Atlantean more than I like Insanity X but I still like Insanity X a lot.  My one complaint with the game was that it felt like I had to beat a bunch of levels before it got interesting due to the robots being too slow.  Atlantean starts off kicking you in the teeth and then insulting your mother from the very get go.

I'm bummed I was too late to get a copy of this game before they stopped taking preorders.  I've seen videos of it and it seems really good.

Ahoy, can't wait to play this again. Also, Atlantean is better than Defender.

If memory serves, Arkhan will sell you a rom for a good deal less than the price of an abcard and you could check out the game that way.

Atlantean is a fantasticly fun shewty with great tunes, nice graphics, and tricky bosses.  Its only downfall is that it's a tad on the short side, but it makes up for that with endurance mode for score runs.

Just wanted to add that Aetherbyte is still taking Atlantean orders through the forums. You need to send PM or email then when some more are ready you'll get an invoice. My blue AbCard game arrived earlier today (TG-16 format) and it is fantastic! Oddly I managed to beat the first boss on my first try and made it all the way to the second boss before I got annihilated. Then I tried again and was unable to beat the first stage boss. T'is life I guess. Was playing Easy speed with 9 ships so I am still sucking at this game somewhat. But for a homebrew, it's amazing. I am also loving the soundtrack too, and the subtle BG graphics changes between levels.
