I liked it more the first time I saw it. When it was called Star Wars without "The Force Awakens" attached. I have a lot of spoiler related comments on it. But my very short opinion is that it was entertaining, but I came away disappointed and in ways I didn't expect that I might.

Hah, Dan, i noticed that as well.  I had to think for a while before deciding whether or not to forgive the numerous recycled themes... but in the end, if felt so much more like star wars on other merits that i overlooked the recycled bits. It was 100x better than ep 1-3 and i actually have "a new hope" for this third trilogy.

See, I noticed lazy writing related problems ala the prequels sneaking their way into these movies.

Here comes some spoilers.

First off when the first order lands on the initial planet to look for the map to Luke's whereabouts they clearly made it enough of a priority to land a large number of troops there. Some of which were specialized in sanitation. Slaughter nearly a whole village all to obtain or destroy the map to prevent it from falling into the rebellion's hands. This seems like it's really important. But wait, once they find the guy who knows where the map is, they go back into Space away from the planet rather than stay down there until the map is either obtained or destroyed? What the f*ck is this? This is prequel level bad writing. If it was that important they would have stayed there. This was just used as a plot device to get Finn to break the pilot loose, steal a ship and move the plot in motion.

Don't discount the power of hubris.  Ren had what he believed was a sure-thing "copy" of the map in his possession (as opposed to the opening scene where he had nothing in his possession), and the rebels were kicking his ass.  What's to say that the retreat was not a good tactical move given the circumstance?

Also.... this is a new low in my life... debating plausibility of star wars plot points. :(

That was later when he captured Ray/Rey and believed he could extract the memory of the map from her mind via Jedi psychic friends power. I'm talking about the initial scene where he's just looking for where the map data went. He didn't think he could extract it from the pilot. Merely the location of the map, which he found out was in the BB8.

We're seeing tomorrow, we're dressing up for it, though, it sounds like it's going to rain here tomorrow, so a little worried our costumes will get messed up on the way in & out of car's & buildings & such, especially my wife's pure white Leia outfit with the buns(not to mention we plan on eating with some friends beforehand at Red Robin, don't need any ketchup stains on that outfit!).

Overall, I definitely liked it. Lots of cool stuff going on in this one. I didn't expect to see it so soon, but I'm glad I did. I may go see it again

Ohhh yesss.....

The character I wanted to see more of came across as worthless in the movie, but it was definitely still an enjoyable little distraction for me.

8/10

PS I hope Phasma totally mentions her fun little adventure through garbage chute hell in episode VIII.

Some of the themes were recycled from the OT, but It's been a 32 years since those films. I was with the popular opinion of not enjoying the prequels and while watching this one I could feel my fanboy heart start to heal.

This was a hard film to pull off, balancing cast and themes of old and new. Its a hard task to please the children of the OT that are now adults while still allowing that 7 year old child to watch the movie and see themselves in the character. Some of my childhood friends have grown up to be very analytical, real world logical, and rigid adults, and I gave them the reminder that Star Wars is a place of wonder, magic, and adventure in sci fi environment. You can't be like, "How does this kid Luke who grew up on a farm, fly a space ship and manage to be the one to destroy the enemy base."

Loved it! I can't wait to see it again. This was my first time watching a movie in 3D and I found the 3D effects mostly distracting and headache-inducing so I plan on sticking to 2D versions of movies from now on.

Did they film all 3 movies at once?  It seems like they've set the series up to backtrack in the next film and lead up to the story that happened in The Force Awakens. Then the third movie could pick up from the end of the Force Awakens and wrap up the this trilogy.

Loved it too. Of course is a "rereading" of the original movie in its themes, but not forgetting to be a new movie itself (like happened with Superman Returns, so referential that it has no personality) with a lot of nice references and easter eggs. Funny moments, great action sequences and a nice cast, liked a lot the new heroes. I heard some people complaining about Kylo Ren, but I think we'll see what made him that way in the next two movies. About that, I also liked that they let lots of question for VIII and IX, unlike Episode I did in the other trilogy. Things like

[SPOILERS]Rey's heritage, what Luke was doing all this time, how Maz got the lightsaber, how and why Ben was corrupted, who really is Max Von Sydow's character etc.[/SPOILERS]

I really enjoyed it.  Sure it retreads A New Hope, but in the end, I like where they're going.  They left a lot of questions unanswered, and I'm eagerly anticipating episode 8.

I loved it. I only have a few minor nitpicks. #1 is the score. While Star Wars themes were in there it seemed like an overall lackluster effort by J Diddy Williams even compared to the prequels. It was also odd not hearing/seeing the 20th Century Fox fanfare before the "A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away..." that I've associated with Star Wars for over 60 years now. At least they didn't have the Disney castle logo animation. Nitpick #2 is the sloppy jump cut when princess Leia is talking in one certain scene. The camera is on her and then mid sentence it jumps forward to being closer to her at a slightly different angle. Now I understand that it probably took Carrie Fisher a great deal of effort to even deliver a single line and they had to cut and paste different takes to make a good one, but they should have cut away to someone else in the room listening for a second to disguise the sloppy-ass jump cut.

Finally saw it.  Loved it.
I found the overall experience very enjoyable with plenty of surprises throughout.  Loved the appearances of the old actors too.

I didn't hold it against the movie because what could they do, but Carrie's years of drugs/alcohol/smoking took their toll. I wonder if they considered modulating her voice and didn't do it from worry of not having her.
