Turbografx 16 component mod issues
« on: January 31, 2016, 07:00:14 AM »
Hello everyone!  I have been attempting to try my hand at modding my Turbografx with on of T-16PCEmod's RGB to component chips (v 2.0) and have a couple small problems.  First of all I cannot seem to get any blues to show up correctly.  They all have a greenish hue to them.  I attempted to adjust the colors on the chip, but that only made it worse.  Secondly I just cannot eliminate the jailbars.  I replaced the caps with 10uf caps C134 and C139, but they are sticking around.  Any advice for any of this?  Oh, and I tried this on my CRT and Plasma.  The CRT had no jailbars, but the color was still off...  Thanks!  Mike

Imo, it does take some time and a lot of testing on the Component V2 chip to get things perfect. Imo you need to take your time, move small amounts at a time and sometimes go back to a previous pot if needed for adjustments.

Honestly I found that watching a video of a game on my computer and then watching the same game on my actual hardware was easiest for me to dial in the colors. I could compare very quickly if I went to far or not enough on one of the pots.

Jailbars.... Not sure I can help with that but there are lots of ideas, stickies and posts on what to try to try and fix that.

Hi.  I basically got the colors a point where everything looks just about right except for the blues.  I used Bonk's Revenge to test the color of the water on level one.  Way off no matter how I adjusted the color.  I have resoldered the connections to the chip from the expansion bus and from the chip to the jacks, but no good.  Oh, the caps I used on the jailbar fix are 4.7uf.  I was directed to use the RGB amp walkthrough to find the locations of the caps that needed to be replaced, but should I use the 22f caps that the component walkthrough recommends?  Thanks

I myself used this guide for the jailbar fix when doing this mod to my US Duo. http://www.tg16pcemods.com/uploads/5/7/0/9/5709716/___tg-16_pce_component_mod_guide.pdf

Alas I use an XRGB-mini and later found out pretty much no matter what I never experience jailbar with any of the consoles I have used to tested or sold.

I would do the mod from the guide to help with the jailbars.

I would then check out this thread.
http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=20347.0

It has a good discussion and with people saying it helped or didn't help them etc.

All I know is, you want it fixed, gotta start somewhere. :)

Yeah, it takes a bit of work to get all the colors balanced, for sure, but it's definitely possible. I actually just swapped between composite and component inputs on my BVM which made it really fast to nail. If everything looks right except for the blues, you might find that you still have to adjust more than just the blue pot.

I haven't done the jailbar fix yet, but I think 4.7 might be too small to make a difference using Tim W's guide. I got ground from the HuC6260 itself, and 5v right from the voltage regulator, and my jailbars aren't too bad (on a Duo-R) to begin with; so I'm hoping Tim W's guide is all that's needed to remove them totally.

I have adjusted both pots up and down the spectrum and had no luck getting close to a blue color.  I think it is either the chip (which I believe is the last possible answer), or a mistake I have made at some point (very likely).  Also, as I don't seem to have any jailbars on the CRT, would that mean I actually fixed them on the analog end, or are jailbars just not as apparent on a CRT?

Double check the pins on the hu6260. It's easy to accidentally bridge a pin or solder to the incorrect one.

If that doesn't get blue to show up than you could possibly have a defective board. Most likely a bad trace on the board somewhere. I've had this problem before.

Yes, I agree with Keith, double check the hu6260. I had the same problem (missing blue) when I installed my component board. I had connected the blue wire to a ground pin instead of the blue pin, and I didn't notice until I looked at my connections with a magnifying glass.

Also for adjusting the colours I recommend using 240P test suite. It made the adjustment process so much easier.

Well I originally used the expansion bus, but I just ran the blue from the 6260 and got the same results.  Looks nice, just too much green and not enough blue.

Okay, now that you've said "not enough blue" instead of "no luck getting close to a blue color", I think most people will refer you back to adjusting all three pots. It'd help if you had a way to load the 240p test suite on your console because then you could open the handy test pattern that shows red, green, blue, and white color bars. It'd give you a better idea of what's going on.

Also: both my LCD and my CRT have a way to display only red, green, or blue signal alone. See if yours does, and take a look - it could give you a better idea of the problem.

Okay... I messed with the two color controlling pots again and no change.  The pot that controls blue gives me very yellow or an almost muted look on the two extremes.  I can only get a tealish green.  That is as closed to a blue as I can get unless the red is cranked way up making everything else wrong (and even still it would barely pass as a blue).  If it is not the setting of the pots is there any other possible thing I can do to get this to work?  I have perfect blues thru the RF.  I have checked every point from the expansion bus to the chip and from the chip to the jacks.  The only thing I have not redone are the connections to the jacks themselves as that would be very difficult to achieve.  Thanks again to everyone for their advice, but at this point I cannot believe it is the pots.  Thanks, Mike

Just to reiterate: there are three pots.
