PCE to turbo tap converter?
« on: March 20, 2016, 07:56:46 AM »
I currently have a TG 16 with a turbo tap and 2 controllers.  I plan on getting a PCE duo system from keith courage on here.  My question is can I use my turbo tap with the PC engine duo system using the converters I see online?  Also, since it comes with 1 controller I will use that unless I have people over, if I need 3 controllers can I then convert turbo to pce from the tap?  I just would like to avoid having to buy a PCE tap and controllers if I can just use what I own.  Much cheaper this way!

That may not work I think the tap has issues when used with a converter.  Player 1 will work but not player 2.  I'm sure others on here can confirm.

Good news is a duo tap from japan is cheap.

I think the main issue is the cable from the system to the tap needs to stay short. I put a 6ft extender cable before the tap once and in dungeon explorer the player 1 controller controlled all the characters simultaneously. I think you get signal crosstalk over a long cable.

It might work if you get a real short converter cable like a 1 inch cable. Or just replace the cable with one with a PC engine style plug.

how easy is it to do?  As sad above if one of those cables from PCE to Turbo would work I would just use it and buy a TG to PCE cable for the 1 PCE controller I would have, but if it won't and I get a cable and have to move all those wires, is it easy to do, and again buy a TG to PCE cable,  or am I better off biting the bullet and buying a PCE tap, and 2 PCE to TG16 converters for my 2 pads I own, which would be the most expensive option of the 3.

I think you can get a pc engine tap and swap that wire with the tg16 tap. Not 100% sure though. That would probably be the easiest thing. Pc engine taps are cheap.

The mod is super easy to do. It only takes a few minutes. If you don't have a tiny glasses screwdriver, you can get by with a small knife point or unfolded paperclip if you're careful.

The cheapest option would be to buy one of the gamedoctorhk PCE cables and mod it to your Turbotap. You won't be able to play multi-player games on your TG16 anymore, but it's cheap, you could keep all of your hardware, and enjoy a Tap with a longer cord on your PC Duo.

It looks like gamedoctorhk uses some different wire colors in their cables. You'll want to write down the colors and switch the same pins as the walkthrough, ignore the color guide.

Yes you can swap tap cables with no extra work. You just can't swap controller cables with tap cables unless you change the wiring accordingly.

For some reason never thought of just buying a pce tap and swapping it.  It's cheaper than cables for some reason.  Is ebay the best place to get taps?  also since i will be running a tap with US outs, what cable do I need to use a PCE controller if I want 3 people to play since I have 2 us controllers already
