Briefcase system won't power on
« on: September 08, 2006, 04:45:15 AM »
I just got a briefcase setup from a friend in Japan, and the unit won't power on.  What things should I look for?  I think it may be the ac adapter because if I plug it directly into the CD-ROM unit, that won't come on either.  I'm going to radio shack to look for a universial ac adapter and see if that fixes it.  What else should I check?  I think I'm turning it on right, I just lift up the little lever in the fron and then switch on the PC Engine itself, right?

That is not right, move that lever to the right first and then power on the pc engine.

Hope it works now :)

Ah, the original CD-ROM2 unit... yes it took me a while to figure out how to turn one on when I first got one :D  After lifting the bar in the center, push it to your right to get power to the interface unit (you'll see the green light come on), then you turn on the actual PC Engine.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Damn NEC and their ways of scaring their customers. I was positive my Duo-R was dead the first time I turned it on - no light whatsoever (and no TV signal because I had the wrong channel on)!

Whoever came up with the "let's use the light only when a CD is being used" shouldn't have worked at NEC/Hudson at all.

Thanks for the info guys!  That did the trick!  Everything seems to be working.  I was a bit nervous because all the items were bought in a used game shop in Japan in the "junk" section.  The ICU30 was 1980 yen with a mint box, the CDROM2 was also 1980 yen with a mint box, and the loose PCE was w/controler was 500 yen.  Not a bad score!  Of course I paid a little more then that to let my contact in Japan make a few bucks, but for under $100 shipped for a complete briefcase set-up with boxes, I think i did OK.

Let me ask you guys this, should I now sell my mint DUO-RX that I bought a few weeks ago and just use the briefcase?  What would you guys do?

I'd keep them both. That way when one of them breaks down, you'll have a back up.

I say keep the Duo-RX. The briefcase has an incredibly dodgy laser and you really shouldn't trust that one. If anything - sell the briefcase and keep the RX.

It's called an Interface Unit (just so you know).

I know that. "Briefcase" is just a nickname for the system

I love how there are all these theories about which PCE systems are more reliable. Don't all PCE systems use the exact same laser? I'm pretty sure they do. I know all Duos do.

No, the first PC Engine uses a very cheap (and unreliable) laser unit altogether. Completely different from the later models.
