The Turbografx 16 I bought doesn't seem to be working...
« on: April 20, 2016, 04:55:07 AM »
I slide the HuCard in and power the TG16 on the game comes right up. The audio is fine. The game is Sidearms and when I press RUN it goes to the next screen to start the intro but then it jumps back to the title screen. The strange thing is if I press RUN again quickly after the intro is about to start it also goes back to the title screen. I also noticed sometimes when I do that the High Score changes.

Is the game bad or is it the system?

I do have another game coming in the mail today but I won't be able to test it with the system until I get home from work later.

I would try out a few other games before determining the fault.

maybe give the card slot and the Huey a good cleaning?

Maybe select button is being held down, sounds like a reset(Run+Select). Clean the contacts? Try diff pad?

I did open the pad and clean it prior to testing the game. I also cleaned the contacts on the game with rubbing alcohol but I haven't cleaned the connects on the system yet.

Someone was suggesting Deoxit for the contacts but I thought it was best to stay away from harsh cleaners like brass cleaner.

Deoxit should be fine.

Sounds to me like an issue with your pad if anything, I know you said you cleaned the pad's pcb, but did you also clean the inside of the rubber membranes? If there are conducive elements in the membrane cavity that collapses into the PCB when the button is pressed it could cause a contact and the game will register a button press. Like has been mentioned it sounds like your select button is being pressed inadvertently, so I suggest troubleshooting that first. It might also be a jumped trace between another element on the board and the select button. Take this to the repair and mod forum, there are a ton of hardware enthusiasts there who would be much better equipped to answer you there :)
