Need some help translating some text the Fatal Fury 2.
« on: April 21, 2016, 08:53:19 AM »
You might be asking "What text in Fatal Fury 2?" Well the text on the configure controles screen is what I need some help with.

I just got a disc only copy of this game and wanted to make a little insert for it and thought it would be nice to list the controles on it. Figuring some of it out was easy but there are a couple things I need some help on.

So with the help of a Hiragana chart and google translate here is what I have figured out.

Japanese - Google Translate - Button
パンチ - Punch - IV & V
キック - Kick - III & II

ラインいどう - Line movement - VI

I think the first one of these has the correct character in position 5 (ぱ), but I am listing both in case my asumption is incorrect.
ラインとぱし - Line and Pasi - I
ラインとはし - Line and chopsticks - I

Punch and Kick were easy to figure out. I think button VI is the Switch Planes move, but button I is the one I'm not sure about. When playing it does some kind of attack and I'm not sure how to describe it.

Also is there an emulator that will emulate a 3 button pad? I tried Mednafen and Magic Engine and they only emulate the 2 button and 6 button pads. I want to see if the config screen is diffent for a 3 button controller. I want to type up the controles for all three controller types because that is how the 2 other 6 button compatable games I have do it. (Street Fighter II and Martial Champion)

Any help would be very much appreciated.

6 Button

2 Button

The three button pad just remaps Run. There really is no three button pad exactly that exists as a seperatlly developed for controller.

As for the buttons. Fatal Fury is a Geo game so it was made to work with no more than four buttons. The things you are describing are probably button combos and since its FF2 I would assume they are different variations of line attacks. Probably forground/background rolls or attacks of some specific variation. I can't remember all the details of the early (infuriating) FF swing line system.

Ok that makes sense about the 3 button pad. I guess the description in the manuals I'm referencing are just talking about that then.

After some more research into the controls for Fatal Fury 2 I'm thinking this is what buttons VI and I are mapped to.

VI is weak Punch & Kick together which is a jump move to the other plain.
I is strong Punch & Kick together which is an attack that knocks the opponent to the other plain.

I am curious about the correct translation for the text from the screen though because the google translate text is not very useful.

a more direct translation of those would be:
IV: Line Shift
I: Line Skip

still confusing, but there it is :P

I believe what is on-screen (though scrunched) is "line tobashi", which means "skipping lines".

I've honestly never met the guy that can really use the FF1/2/Special line change system. I know they are out there, I just never met one. Ditching it was the best move that series ever made.

Exodus & ccovell thanks for that translation info, I appreciate it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for translation assistance resources?

This has got me thinking of making some inserts for PC Engine games that are mostly playable but it would be nice to have a menu and control reference on hand.

Zeta,
I agree the line system is tricky, I see what they were going for to make the game stand out but I just don't think it worked very well. I think the game is still fun though and the PC Engine port is nothing short of remarkable.
