D&D: Order of the Griffon - Music Patch?
« on: May 02, 2016, 04:53:25 AM »
Hey Everyone,

Does anyone know if D&D: Order of the Griffon ever received a music patch to fix the annoying bug where any action causes the music to just stop and end? It sounds like a glaring issue, but maybe there was no way around it?

It definitely has not, but it has generated many requests for one.

The music isn't all that exciting, but it'd still be a nice patch to have.

It sounds like a very big oversight in my opinion because it happens so arbitrary. Ie. You could be in a fight and reviewing everything (music thumping to get you ready to battle), and then as soon as you perform an action it goes dead quiet and never comes back. At the very least, if you need a sound channel for a sound effect, play it, and then resume the music. But that's just my opinion.

I would be very interested in seeing if someone could produce a proper patch for this as well. While I will admit I am no  PCE/TG16 hacker, from the face of it it seems like a trivial mod to perform, given all the complicated stuff people have successfully done before. Again, in my humble opinion of course.

That seems like quite a glaring bug. I wonder if they played the game before they released it. "Oh well... it's just the Turbo. No one will ever play it."

Some programmers have called it a bug and described what is happening under the hood.

I think that the soundtrack is perfect for the game and helps it feel unique in the sea of 16-bit RPGs.

Wonderful Soundtrack for OOtG and it's a serious shame that you have to play all battles in silence!

I do recall a few times in the past someone mentioning/requesting this.  Perhaps mentioning this in the Dev portal will lead to some answers?

I see it as an oversight, of sorts.

The rest of the GoldBox games didn't have in game music really.  Sometimes you would get an occasional jingle, and that's it.

So, really, you're not getting hosed as much as you think.  We all played through all of these games in complete silence, with DOS speaker SFX for the most part.

Later, you got title music, and then silence again:

so, it's authentic!

I somewhat agree with this, but I also think that perhaps the developers could have made more people happy by ether going all the way with this, or not at all. The reason being, if you don't include music, you can say it was a conscious decision to stay true to the source material. If you do include music, you can say your trying to improve the experience to be even better than the source material. But by implementing music in a half-baked way, people just come to the conclusion your a sloppy developer or mostly have experience making Shareware titles. :-D

No disrespect to the original development team of course, but that's how I think it genuinely comes across to most of the general public. IMHO anyways.

It was an error. A bug.

There is no way this was intentional design.

it could be my imagination but I thought I read a post here once where someone said they made a patch to fix the music but that the sound effects no longer worked.

is this my imagination? I can't seem to find the post anymore.

You are not crazy, I vaguely remember this, too.
