Guess i'll respond with a few more things, I hadn't seen that the topic had grown quite a bit but the topic was still serving it's purpose I suppose, but it's early and I had time to read it through, though i'll likely not recall it all. Still i'll address some stuff. I do appreciate jelloslug at least validating our transaction, while i'm not sure what the original desire to expose the user was, it at least helps to not make me look like a liar of some sort
For a lot of the other post, a lot of you are right, but you also look at it the wrong way. I'll throw some background out that i'm sure someone will simplify as 'lol collectard omg' and move along, but hey, why not.
I'm a collector, yes it's true. I started about 10 years ago over one moment. My fiancee had missed the entire 8 bit and 16 bit generation, and I was trying to find some mutual fun things for us to share our time with. I purchased a Snes and a copy or Kirby Super Star, we completed the game and had a lot of fun doing so. I had bought the game complete for about 30 bucks as well. That same title can sell near the 100 range nowadays, to help put into perspective the motivation to try and get this over with. I consider the collecting aspect the burden, with the end result being to play the stuff on the original hardware and have the most authentic, but quality experience I could come up with.
When I first began, things were cheaper, sellers were looser and in general it was a lot easier to deal with, it only took about 5 years for me to begin regretting going for complete titles because of the way pricing was jacking up so much, but when you get that far into something, it becomes difficult for some of us to back away and call it quits, even if it takes out a lot more money than expected. However, the urge for me to complete my various system collections comes from the desire to get it over with in the event the cost continue to rise, I do not want even more games to reach a prohibitive point that I can no longer ever afford to purchase them (as many have)
In the end there are many kind of collectors, with the only mutual shared aspect being that they are collecting something. In my case, the definition of a collection has altered itself a lot over a decade, my entire game area is quite large and has a lot of things to display, it's designed to basically be a monument to the hobby both visually, but also in terms of the ability to play everything. A lot of work went into wiring everything and placing seating everywhere or ensuring there is enough space to play on all the sorts of the stuff that has released.
This is a hobby that I took on because I play them, if the day ever comes I don't want to play them, i'd offload the whole area and never look back. While I like the display aspect, I don't personally see why i'd want to display anything when I'd not care to actually use it. This is also something I take part in with my would be wife, and yes, even in social settings we have managed to gather people to play Saturn Bomberman or Four Swords on the Gamecube, light gun shooters, etc.
In the end, I think the big issue here is that I came here with one primary goal right now, which was to learn about the system and to learn the trappings to look out for when buying games for it. However, while I came here to collect, I'd also come here to play when I'm able to allocate more time to doing it. It's true I spend a lot of time collecting which is a lot less time I can use for the playing aspect, but if I spend too much time playing and not buying, suddenly that game I thought was 30 bucks is now 100 bucks, and that creates a lot of issues for me as i'm not a rich guy, this stuff takes a long time for me to save money for.
When I do decide to binge on these games, this is the only dedicated TG community i've ever seen, so it would likely be the place i'd want to share my thoughts with too (as I do on plenty of sites). The main issue I guess is that I came here as a collector first hoping to eventually take part in the normal discussion, but I guess the damage there is done regardless. In any event, I collect for both play and montage, however I don't appreciate the accusation that I just buy haphazardly and have no idea what's coming my way, every title I buy has had plenty of research done, reviews, videos, and at times a test drive via emulator if something is really unsure (or expensive). If it's something i'd really love to play I increase my likelihood of shelling out the value for it, it's all very much curated to my own taste.
When I worked with jello, he had a whole list of stuff I hadn't look into yet, alongside the stuff I did want, I spent time looking into video footage and reviews of a lot of stuff, not realizing for example that the tennis game had a unique looking rpg lite mode, and things like that fueled my purchase. If I never wanted to try it, i'd not be buying it. I'm sure the reasons each of you come to the conclusion for disliking collectors is different, and I personally don't care for most collectors as I feel they miss the spirit of the hobby (which is playing, kind of counter productive when you won't open your game), but I guess it's their money to do with as they please.
I doubt this post will help much but, well it's early and i'm the only one awake, so enjoy I guess :p
Edit:
i could honestly care less about what he "wants", its just lulz to poke fun.
the problem is the "insta-tard" of wanting to buy everything before he even plays or wants to talk about it.
WTB 15 COMPLETE games, "rarer" stuff.
I mean, come on, the title was begging for this.
his next thread will be "WTB: Riot Zone, must include outer box"
Way ahead of ya buddy, thanks for the support in this topic!
