Fire Pro Wrestling - How to pin?
« on: June 13, 2016, 06:12:13 AM »
Hey everyone,

I know there are a few Fire Pro Wrestling games for the PC-Engine, but in one I was playing i noted that I couldn't pin anyone. As soon as you do, they throw you off. Is it simply a matter of wearing them down further? Seems like we were fighting for ages! Any ideas? Or do I have to do something to keep the pin held?

Are you sure that your Virtual Cushion is calibrated correctly?

I've only played later games in the series, so I can't say for sure, but are you mashing buttons while pinning? Fire Pro generally discourages button mashing, so you may actually be telling your wrestler to release the pin. I've never known a game in the series to have a separate animation for intentionally releasing a hold, so there's no visual way to differentiate between that and a wrestler breaking out.

Ah, that might be it. Generally speaking, I'm not sure how the game plays or even how it decides who wins grapples. Most games usually use some kind of "Whoever pushes buttons the fastest in x amount of time wins", so I figured once you pin someone you need to jam the button to keep your opponent down.

Yeah, that's pretty standard, so I don't blame you. I can't be 100% on the way the PCE games work, as I started with a later game in the series and never went back to try the older ones, but in general Fire Pro rewards timing and not button mashing. You win grapples by entering your command at the right time, usually when the wrestlers touch. There may be an audio cue as well; I don't know how far back it goes, but there's a "clap" sound that plays when you're supposed to press the button in most of the games. If your timing is better than your opponent, you get to do your move. If the counter system is the same, however, you have to wear down your opponent before hitting more powerful moves or they'll counter automatically. So start with simple stuff like strikes and bodyslams.

Ok, so in the later games how does pins work? For example, in Fire Pro Wrestling 3? Do you just push the button once and that's it? And if you didn't wear the other guy out enough then he'll just break loose?

You know...I have 100 hours at least in FirePro A and FirePro S and I can't for the life of me answer that question. I guess it's been too long.

Your not exactly alone. I remember playing a match of Fire Pro Wrestling: Six Man Scramble on the Saturn and we had a match that went on forever. Essentially because we didn't know how to pin someone properly. Eventually it got to the point where I slap someone, and they get fatigued (huffing and puffing for a long time), and I get fatigued (for executing the slap). So in the end, it was like all these old men who can't do anything because we're all so tired and anytime we get knocked down, we're on the floor trying to recover for like (what seemed like) minutes. lol.

To be clear, by later I meant after the series moved to other consoles. I haven't played any of the PCE versions. That said, in the games I have played, yes. You initiate the pin and don't press anything further. If you've worn down your opponent enough (or just get lucky), they'll stay down.

Not sure if this applies here, but regarding your 6MS story, there's actually a button to catch your breath. Some wrestlers have better stamina than others, so how often you have to use it varies. I'd be surprised if they'd tried to cram something like that onto a PCE controller, so it's probably a later addition.

Yeah, the PCE games are super simple and frankly...not very fun.
