Help Turbo Duo R Video Cable
« on: June 16, 2016, 04:55:16 AM »
Hi guys,
it's a pleasure for me to join this amazing forum, finally a place in where I feel at home ;)
I recently bought a Turbo Duo R and it's amazing. But the video quality on my HD tv it's really crap.
The Duo I have has only the composite cable (not modded rgb), I tried to buy a cheap upscaler but there isn't any difference with or without the upscaler.
What should I do to improve the quality? Because it is a real pain for the heart to play Lords of Thunder with such a crappy graphic.
I know that there's the Mini regbx Framemeister, but 300 quids are too much for me, and here in Uk I don't think there's anybody able to do the rgb mod.
Should I buy a better upscaler (I found this one https://www.marmitek.com/it/prodotto/co ... t-ah31.php)? Or just buy an used CRT tv (my charity shop little ones for like 20 quids)?
Thank you very much

Bingo. If you an't RGB modding and using a composite cable, just get a old CRT and save your money for games.

+1 on getting a CRT.  Without an RGB mod, I don't think any upscaler is going to help much, not enough to warrant the upscaler's cost anyhow.

There's the OSSC ( http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/ossc.html ), but then you're still facing down the barrel of modding the console, plus the cost of the box itself.  Given that you are in the UK, I don't know how the Duo works with a 50hz signal that you'd be getting from a CRT, however.

Thanks to everybody,
tomorrow I'll buy the CRT and let you know how it looks.
to @Major: you made me think with your reply ¨blahblah first world problem¨
You're totally right: how to get a nice image from a Turbo it's really a first-stupid meaningless, world problem.
We cannot never ever compare what it's trully important for us to what's important for less developed country.
I'm just born here, right now I'm doing a shitty job and studiyng and paying a lot of taxes for doing better in the future for me and my country, I do really want to do better for my country young people.
Still, retrogaming I know it's a very expensive hobby, but I'm doing my best to combine my stupid hobbies, the job that I don't like, and the better things for my and my country I want to do in the future.
It isn't a comply about what you said Major, I want just to explain better because you were totally right.

Best regards

Maybe this is a dumb question, but will the Duo-R work with a PAL TV?

EDIT:  you may want to reach out to the UK-based https://www.videogameperfection.com for modding.

All right guys, I just bought a CRT tv for 10 punds, the image looks very sweet and sharp but... in black and white...
With the HD tv all the colours were displayed.
Is it because the Pal standard?
What should I do? The Turbo is giving me an hard time ;p
If I get the rgb mod will I get rid of the problem?
@Savage pencil: thanks for the link, on the site they don't have the Duo's mod, I'll try to mail them.

Cheers

Get a CRT if you have the space for one. Composite signal looks stellar on those, and zero lag will help you immensely with SHMUPs.

NTSC colorburst freqency and encoding is incompatible with PAL. Most PAL TVs handle PAL60 signals great, and some late gen CRTs can even run NTSC60 over composite. Sucks that yours doesn't. Your best bet is to get it RGB modded and run a SCART connection.

Also some TV are just black and white.  If the glass looks grey when it's off, it's probably B&W only.  If it's dark or black, it should be color.

G  morning guys,
I bought a small, old crt because I don't have enough space. The tv is definitely in color, but seems to not be able to run in ntsc mode.
I contacted a modder for retro console, but he's not doing Turbo (yet).
So, until the rgb mod will be done, I can both buy a new tv (the shop has more recent, bigger ones, but I really don't want to use too much space), or I can buy this https://www.amazon.co.uk/NTSC-PAL-converter-Xbox-Gamecube/dp/B00I45DD7U/ref=sr_1_14?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1466177858&sr=1-14&keywords=ntsc+to+pal
Looked on some forums and seems to be good.
Thank you for your help guys, have a g day

Well save money for games but I would change that and say get to buying games now if you can. Yeah PAL TVs with NTSC consoles not good. I wouldn't waste any money on a cheap scaler they are crap. Good luck getting a NTSC CRT TV. I guess maybe a PVM that is NTSC. It might take time to track one down so buy games while you look. If you want to play on your HDTV get the XRGB mini. It is not cheap but it works so well. I say this if you have several old consoles. Then that is just the beginning. Track down a modder in the UK and look into RGB mod.

I really have no idea about playing NTSC on PAL CRT or how you could get a NTSC. Also your lucky a CRT could have RGB SCART in your neck of the woods.

If you can keep trying to find someone to mod that's your best bet. Scart wins all. Failing that just keep trying different CRTs. Last 2 I had did NTSC.

I've noticed on my Samsung LED Smart TV that composite looks great for my TurboDuo. Not as good as HD as we all know Turbo is lower resolution but pretty good for what it is. Most of my systems look pretty good on the Samsung TV except for my Genesis which looks like crap. So not sure if it is the system there but I will be trying another Genesis soon to see if I can get improved picture on that one. So, maybe a lot depends on the type of LCD/LED TV you have?
