TurboGrafx-16 Logo / Orange Label Font
« on: June 22, 2016, 06:09:03 PM »
What's up people? New guy here.
So for a really long time I've wanted the font used for the TG16 logo, as well as various games.
You know the one:
I never found a perfect match, but I did find Mekanik.
I'm using it as a base, and am modifying it to more closely resemble the target font.
As you can see, progress is coming along:

      (click for full size)

Now obviously it's not perfect yet.
For example, I've found that zero shouldn't have a slash, my W is fat, and my 'lowercase' J is extended too high.
I do aim to perfect it eventually, though!
All I need are straight, high-quality scans of any cases, cards, manuals, or magazines that use this font.
So can anyone point me in the right direction?
Maybe you know of a good archive?
Maybe you can scan some of your collection?
Every little bit helps!

I hope you like what you see so far, and I can't wait to see this project completed.

UPDATE: There are now two versions of the font!

Version 0.0:
This is the first version I released; about 60% complete, with 70% accuracy.
Accurate enough for most applications, but ultimately flawed.

TinyUpload

Version 0.1:

I'd call this version around 70% complete, and 90% accurate; a vast improvement to the previous version.
+ Capital letters were adjusted to be slightly shorter.
+ All characters were adjusted for accuracy.
+ Many characters were added or replaced, such as currency symbols.[/color]
- Accented characters are currently improperly spaced.
- Accents themselves are off-center and commonly touching the tops of characters.

Enjoy!

Looking good! I look forward to you sharing the font with us here.

These are not the best quality, but for purposes of fine-tuning the fonts, it should be good:

Welcome aboard!

That's a cool project and looks great even if not 100% done yet.

Pay attention, noobs. This is how you make a first post.

Looks great so far, look forward to the finished product.

I've been seeking the font used in the Super Nintendon't logo, found close matches but nothing exact.

Good thread/project, it reminds me of this thread about the NEC logo font.

Thanks for the support, everyone!
And thanks for the link, esteban!
I found a few manuals that use the font on them, but it occurred to me that I also need to find images from many other games.

As you can see here, Neutopia (one of my favorite games, btw) uses the font on the card, but not on the case (or the manual).
The same can be said for Bonk's Adventure, Final Lap Twin, and probably many more.
I know the orange spines on some games cases use the font, too.
Space Harrier for example, has custom art on the front of the case, as well as the card, but the spine uses the font that I'm looking for (which I will now refer to as the 'Orange Label' font).

So does anyone know a place with good scans of either the cards or the orange label spines?
Plan B is to continue Googling the names of every game and hoping for useable results.

I have some high quality scans of a whole bunch of HuCARDs...

Maybe 20-30? from years ago.

When I get home tonight, I will try to upload 2-3 scans...

Unless someone beats me to the punch.

Once perfected, this should become the default forum font.

I don't know about readability (especially at small sizes).....

But, yes, in theory, we need TurboFont-16*.

* Best Viewed as a 16-point font.

Thanks for the warm welcomes and support, folks! :D
Any scans (or straight, low-glare photos) are appreciated.
I would scan my own games, but they're sadly few, and 4 hours away at my grandmother's place.
TG16 was her first love in terms of gaming - she's probably playing Bomberman '93 as we speak.

As far as using the font for something on the site here, I don't think it would be suitable for the entire site (because readability), but buttons and stuff might be cool. :)
And Sarumaru, I certainly hope you have a great many uses for this font.
I'd be pleasantly surprised if this one got half as much use as my Super Mario Maker fonts.

Just on a side note, I'm hoping to complete this by the end of June.
Failing that, I'll release the font in whatever state it's in, and continue working through July.
At the time of this writing, I'd call it "a sloppy forgery" - it's pretty close, but noticeably different.
The letter forms are coming along nicely, but the spacing is probably a bit off.

Nice job so far, take a look at gotham nights font which is also similar.

We have some covers at thecoverproject.net

http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=4007.0

I made a TG font in a 3d app a long time back so thats what I was using for the TG dvd covers on there. Later I did convert it over to an actual font but it’s incomplete and mixed with other custom stuff.

SeymorOnion when he was making his envelopes a few years back used some of my stuff from the cover project and converted the font to a png here with a few of his own letters

It isn’t perfect though and won’t be as good as using the actual art to build your font.

Here are some good covers as well http://www.pcengine.co.uk/index.htm

I haven't forgotten about the HuCARD scans.

I searched an old backup drive last night...

Now I only have a few more places to look.
