It's just something I thought YouTubers did. People seem to get a lot of free stuff in return for helping promote things.

It totally is.  So do we have a deal, then?  Here's what I was thinking:

For $150 shipped, I will just say "iRetroGamer.com", with no context, at the end of one of my "niche" videos.

For $125 shipped, I will say "...and I want to give a shout-out to iRetroGamer.com" at the end of one of my "niche" videos.

For $100 shipped, I will say "...and I want to give a BIG shout-out to iRetroGamer.com" at the end of one of my "niche" videos.

For $75 shipped, I will say "...and I want to give a BIG shout-out to my buddy iRetroGamer.com" at the end of one of my "niche" videos.

If you give me the console absolutely free, I will say "...and please check out my good buddy's up-and-coming YouTube channel, iRetroGamer.com, for in-depth analysis of all of your favorite retro games." at the end of my next LAUNCH VIDEO (lots of views!).

I do appreciate that you like my channel, and it's not that I'm purposefully trying to sound like an ass, but think about how snarky this post seems, and then think about how you sound when you go to someone like Sparky, who doesn't know you from Adam, with your hand out asking for free stuff in exchange for a plug.

LOL these were funny examples.

I get where you are coming from, but I honestly thought it was a harmless gesture I was making. I thought "If at least 2-3 of my viewers end up purchasing a set from Sparky, then why not throw some my way (I was asking for the smaller set of labels)." I'm friends with video game author Brett Weiss after doing a video about his ROOM OF DOOM and his occupation as a video game writer. As a kind gesture he gave me a copy of his latest book.

Now I suppose I should have just done the video spotlight on Sparky and his work and let it be his decision on whether or not he wanted to give me any freebies. I guess I'm still learning the etiquette around this sort of thing.

I can understand where I would come off as a little sneaky asking up front. My apologies.

Bear in mind that everything I've said is just my personal opinion and not any kind of set-in-stone YouTuber etiquette.

I've gotten a few Everdrives free from krikzz, but I had already done reviews of I think 3 of his products, and he's the one who offered to send me more based on those reviews.  I also got a free book, but the author put out a call for reviewers and I just threw my name into the hat.  If doing reviews and getting free stuff is something you're interested in doing, then just start doing reviews and people will come to you.  I've turned down multiple offers of free homebrew games in exchange for reviews just because I don't want to turn my channel into that kind of deal.  The Everdrives I was reviewing anyway because I think they're awesome, and the book review was a text article that went on my website.

I think it's one thing to approach a *company* and say "hey I have this YouTube channel and I am interested in reviewing your products", but when it's a guy like Sparky who just does it for the love of the community, that's when you cross over into "poor form" territory.

Good advice. Thank you. I can definitely see the error in how I approached it.

Would love for you to check out some of my videos. We have a similar style in our documentary approach. Also the "My Retro Life" videos I do are very well received. They are a series of home movie videos taken from my childhood in the 90s growing up with a "Gamer Dad".

How about you give it to be so I can kick start my YouTube show?

I come game sack approved. I did the voice over for the fart they would used on their "classic" videos.

Joe knows what I am talking about.

Mm :-"

I've seen some of your videos.  I enjoyed the "My Retro Life" vids that I saw, for sure.  I wish I still had access to my old home movies, but I don't...

NOTE: To have integrity, a person/website should always *clearly* (upfront) disclose any arrangements/freebies made with Party X, Y and Z in any article/video.

It's simply the best way to handle things.

Why didn't you do this on Le Turbo Doodle? It was obviously sponsored by null's website! ;)

Wow, this is the darkest thread I've read on these forums, what a bummer  :-({|= .
Did Tim Burton orchestrate this debauchery ?

iretrogamer - sorry for your loss man, but I am envious of the memories you have with your dad he sounds like  he was a great guy. I watched your master system videos and commented on them saying the same in the past (Gregory Brant on youtube)

Necro, it's comments like that which encourages people to be quiet about their personal lives and no share. You have every right to say them, but I have to agree that the degree of hurtful intent in that statement was unnecessary, and no one would think less of you if you apologized for crossing the burn line, asick burn, but so sick it's disgusting [who get's the reference? zeta?]

I agree that iretro screwed the pooch on the price, and making a thread about it made it even harsher; this could've been answered in PMs from experienced members after taking the time to form relationships with them.

The reality of someone losing a love one who was obviously dedicated to NEC and turbo, is a f*cked up harsh thing to think about.

And Sparky, congratulations on beating the C beast, that's a blessing for you and your family and I'm really happy to hear you came out of that darkness sharing this world with us and playing some fun games from time to time

I hope your game console sells at a reasonable price for both you and the customer, and I hope this becomes water under the bridge. Next time you have a spare moment on the shitter or something, why don't you post in the daily dose of gaming (all platform "what I'm playing discussion thread" in console gaming section) or the turbo what I've been playing thread. The community here is more open armed about opinions and game discussion than any I've been involved with, and the opposite is true about BST threads (which I think is why my broke ass enjoys this forum so much)  :)

It seems to me like there is way too much bullying that goes on here.  The guy lowered his price, even though he had every right to charge whatever price he wants.  Likewise, nobody is forced to buy it.  Who cares if people collect this stuff?  It's not going to stop going up in value just become some fans who like to talk about how cool the games are deem it to be too expensive.

There is way too much negativity here.  Attacking someone personally is just uncalled for.

The only video of Tyler that I liked was a clip of him playing NES Ghosts 'n Goblins when he was a babby.
