I'm not trying to say it wasn't cruel or that it was totally appropriate, just that it was within the rules.  It may be 'wrong' in terms of some community standards, sure, but is it worse than the constant sex jokes, misogyny, mental handicap jibes, or telling people to go f*ck themselves simply because they asked too high of a price?  I think not.  The bar isn't set that high here, but y'all are free to petition for rules changes.

Well... Just what a forum full of people that get upset over just about anything they don't agree with needs: A moderator who tries to justify his own douche-baggery!

I don't get what makes people in here so much like angst-ridden teenagers... And I know all about that... I teach them 9 months out of the year.

I got attacked plenty in my first few days here. All I did was be nice to people and when confronted shared about myself and my reasoning for what I was doing. What did I get? A middle finger basically in my face and a few more insults on the side from a few who seem to think the only way to tell someone there is a better way, or a different way to do things, is to insult them as much as possible. Children do that. Grow up.

By the way... That was no attack. That was "life advice." I have high schoolers that display more empathy and character than some I have already met in here. Maybe I would petition about the rules if I believed that anything would be done about them. The last time anyone posted in THAT thread was 2008, I think!

I have no idea who you are since I barely pay attention around here anymore, but I went back and read your Duo-R thread.  You need to either grow a thicker skin or stick to over-moderated forums like NintendoAge and Sega-16 or the "retrogaming" areas of Reddit.  When you come to a forum and lay out your plans for doing something, people are going to have dissenting opinions.  When you come here and tell us that you're going to spend $1000+ on a Turbo-Duo setup, while using a Retro Freak for everything else because you want to "start collecting retro games", you're going to get dissenting opinions.

Zeta is never nice, but he is often wise.  True to his form, he came off much more harshly than he needed to in that thread, but I agree with almost everything that he said.

LIFE ADVICE: Make an *earnest* attempt at learning the norms/customs/mores/etc. of a community/group before lecturing them :)

It's Social Interaction 101...

Now, I like you and think you have made a noble effort to pull yourself out of the hole you are in...but, really, you shouldn't be spending all this time trying to explain yourself when you could have spent just a small bit of time getting to know the perspective of the pcefx community (we have many views, and some consensus).

The irony, of course, is that MANY of us came to the consensus that you didn't start things off too well.

C'est la vie!

Don't worry about it!

:)

Also: WELCOME, COMRADE :)

You have weathered the first of (many?) storms.

A person that says a forum needs more moderators is the same type of person who would've been cheering when guys with red armbands were marching down the street and enforcing what's right.

I only post in this forum because the world gets awful scary when people need higher powers to strictly enforce a regimented lifestyle.  I imagine if more strict moderators were put in place here, a few years down the road we would all look back and say, "what the f*ck did we just do?"

We could rename the forum "Turbo Age".

I have no problem with anyone disagreeing with me. Just be polite when doing so. After so many times of going back and forth with him and one other in there I unfortunately had enough and fed some back. That, admittedly, caused me to react the way I did in here. I read this whole thread the way you say you read mine. The way a few people treat others around here is more than just "dissenting opinions," and that may unfortunately be many people's first impressions of a forum. In my thread, I tried to end the argument and smooth things over a couple times with Zeta. It was never acknowledged.

I wonder sometimes if a society (like this forum) just gets so used to people acting rudely that they don't even notice or they just shrug it off. But, you have now had 2 new people in here, as well as others, having issue with how people have treated others in just the past few days. Maybe some things that have become cultural norms should change? Perhaps the ones with dissenting opinions about how people should be treated should be listened to as well?

If not... Maybe you are right. Maybe this is not where I should be. I don't need to develop a "thicker skin." I have a very strong opinion on how people should be treated. That opinion does not stop before myself, and I will fervently defend others as I would defend myself. Obviously, I am not ashamed to defend myself when I feel attacked. I admit that I have not been perfect. But I will always admit that I have been wrong and apologize if I have done something that is hurtful to another. If I have done so, please point it out and I will try my best to reconcile. But I won't break my back over it if the other party won't listen.

I may not completely agree with you, but I do appreciate your willingness to not attack me in the process of disagreeing with me. Thank you. I hope you feel that I have been respectful to you as well.

I don't place much value on politeness. It's a nice idea, but the biggest a$$holes on earth have no trouble using it so what is it really worth?. I'm sure Henry Kissinger will sit on a throne of skulls in hell but at the same time he is a master of politeness. Politeness is more of an asset to the evil that anyone, really. The best disguise.

Meanwhile Issac Newton was apparently rude at best and he single handedly advanced science centuries.

It just seems to slow down conversation. These threads lately where the crotchety geezers dump on the noob instantly because of the placement of one word in a post...the only thing more amazing than how many times this happens is how many times it genuinely cuts right through and ferrets out the a$$holes as intended.

The things being attacked are human vices like greed and deception, we're not burning gypsies and books here.

I understand all of what you're saying.  Try to understand things from our end.  This is not about you, it is about what we see around here week in and week out.

What you have to understand is that some of us have been part of the "scene" for a long time.  When I got started with this hobby (in the late 90's), I didn't even know that "video game collecting" was a thing.  I just figured that I could finally pick up all of the systems and games that I had wanted as a kid because everyone else was just throwing them out.  I was just playing and enjoying "old video games" for a solid 5 years before I discovered that people actually collected this shit for the sake of collecting it, or for that matter even found an online community of other people who also enjoyed playing old games.  I just did it on my own because I enjoyed it.  Nowadays, people just seem to decide over coffee one day that they should "start collecting 'retrogames'", and they go on to embody everything that is wrong with this hobby.  Many of these folks eventually find their way onto these forums because *of course* they want to collect for the TurboGrafx, because the shit is rarer and therefore makes them cooler to their collectard buddies.  They show up here, and their very first post is "WTB: TurboDuo", because of course these shelf queens want to hoard Turbo games, but don't want to pay eBay prices, so they think we'll cut them a deal.  So when you come in here talking about how you're gonna drop a grand on a Turbo and XRGB mini, but then just use a RetroFreak for everything else, it just sends up red flags for some of us.

Seriously, if you're cool with emulation (which you must be if you want a Retro Freak) then just get a Wii and mod it, or build an emulation box and buy some controller adapters.  If I didn't already own all of this shit, there's no way I would start buying it now.  I'd get a small form factor PC and a bunch of controller to USB adapters, and just have fun.

If you are dead-set on going the route you're planning, then that's your decision but you can't expect everyone here to kiss your ass about it.  If politeness is really that important to you, then like I said you need to stick to online communities that prioritize that (i.e. heavy moderation).  Places like this and the Neo-Geo forums don't coddle people.  You either fit in, or you're going to have a rough time.

The red flag for me was his insistence on the Duo-R's price, with an ever changing parts list to justify the inflated cost quoted.  If you want a Retro Freak, skip the made up numbers to rationalize your decision and just go buy the silly thing; it's okay if we don't "understand".

I greatly prefer loosely moderated forums over hyperactive places with aggressive mods. If one wants over-moderated forums, obviously as previously mentioned there are lots of places for him to go. I don't think anything here is bad at all tbh, but maybe I've been on the internet too damn long.

This was pretty odd to me too. Has to be a Duo R, has to have it modded immediately, needs all these extra peripherals right away. It's his money but yeah...it all seemed to be justification for buying the retrofreak. If you want the retrofreak, just buy it and enjoy it.

Yeah the mindset is a bit silly. Some people would probably consider me a collector of fantasy/sci-fi paperbacks, anime, movies, video games etc... To me it is more of an accidental collection than anything else, because I don't get rid of something I might want to revisit since I don't need to do so to buy more media. But I'm just buying this stuff because I want to watch/read/play it. If you aren't doing that then what is the point? I have a friend that is a sealed collector and he drives me nuts from time to time about it when I tell him he should just ditch the sealed copies (he goes for one open and one sealed of stuff).
