Yeah, it's nothing too special.  100% identical to the PCE game.  Only difference is that it runs in 640x480, so depending on your monitor/tv it might look better then when played on a PCE.  It runs totally fine for me in Win 7 64bit.   You just need to run the installer in compatibility mode and the game will only run in 256 colors.

Price wise, it pops up here in Japan often enough and usually goes for $100 or so.

Serious question: is the emulation really good, then?

Is this the earliest example of PCE emulation on a computer platform?

Do we have examples of other early emulation from the 90's?

Sounds like it was coded natively for Windows at 640 x 480. Interesting, didn't know about it either and looks like any owners can take advantage of the big-spending eBay madness surrounding the US TG-16 HuCard.

EDIT: Corrected PCE use to TG-16 for clarity - I used "PCE" in the general sense.

What's crazy is that the $100,000 auction isn't so insane because of the PCE version. It's really only this crazy because of the TG-16 version which has so much hyper circling it that the PCE version has gone to the moon as well. If there never was a TG-16 ver the US-only dipshits would never even know their favorite greatest game ever even existed as a PCE title. This is a halo effect amplifying another halo effect.

And yet you can still get an LT for less that MSRP. I don't understand anything.

What is the "halo effect" and what is an LT? I don't know these terms.

An LT is a handheld PCE that cost an insane $700 or some shit when it came out. Before there was such a thing as a collectable game this thing was, at least with my friends, a holy grail. Worth at least 10 Supergrafxs.

The halo effect usually refers to something like a Corvette being such a kick-ass car that people go out and buy much worse GM vehicles out of...I don't know. Submissive worship? Awareness? Lack of awareness? I don't know. I know exactly why people buy Dodge Vipers. I have no idea at all why they buy Dodge Calibers.

So at any rate, the US MC is so popular that when collectards learn of a JP version they want that instead as a low cost alternative but then the price of that increases too. In this case we are seeing some guy trying to leverage that doubly.

A similar thing is happening to MVS.

The best thing that could have happened to an actual fan of Magical Chase would be if the US version never came out. The JP version would be the same price as Hanataakadaka or similar titles, everyone who knew of it would be able to get a copy.

Doesn't really feel like emulation to me.  The game is basically one big exe file and I'm no hacker, so I couldn't really tell you if it's emulated or not.  But it looks amazingly clean on my FG2421 in full-screen.  Also, while my copy of Magical Chase is in fact pirated, I do own an original Win 95/98 version of Growlanser (same publisher), which being a playstation 1 game, it must have been actually ported to Windows, as I can't really imagine a 133mhz Win 95 machine properly emulating a ps1...

Indeed, there is no way Win 95 133mhz is emulating a PlayStation flawlessly. Bleem! was Win98 and expected beefier hardware specs.

I always thought Magical Chase PC was a port... I am inclined to continue thinking so...since we have no evidence suggesting otherwise.

The same thing has happened with Lickle on the Famicom due to the "halo" around Little Samson.  Can't fault people for wanting a legit way to play a decent game.  Now, do the prices justify the fun of the game? That's a whole other story.

I don't think it's an emulated version, as they recorded the music into wav format. And they lazily just recorded the PCE tunes.

I wish they took advantage of the technology at the time and came up with an enhanced soundtrack (like Cotton on the PCE for example) in CDDA (I know wav is the same quality but CDDA has some advantages).

As per early PCE emulators, VPCE comes to mind, proly released around the same time as of this game.

Should run in 16bit color, at least it did for me on Win95 and XP.

I think Magic Engine was 1997. If someone was only concerned with the performance of one game they could optimize the emulator quite a bit. I have no doubt it could have been done in-period, if just would have been really weird. I'd assume it was a real port.

For me if I run it in anything but 256 colors, the game gives me an error message to please use 256 color mode. (On Win 7)
