pc engine duo-r system instruction manual in english ?

searching for a english translated version for the system operation manual  / guide for the duo-r, we don't speak japanese and we are having a tough time understanding how to save a game while playing it, whether it is a cd or hucard.

A system manual won't really help, as saving is different from game to game and not all of them offer the ability.  What specific games are you trying to play?

For system save management once you've made some saves, press select on the bios boot screen.  The top option is to view and delete individual save files, the middle option is to format the save ram (deleting everything and sometimes necessary if save ram is corrupted), and the bottom option is to go back to the boot screen.

What are the problems you're encountering?  Which games, specifically?

You probabaly don't have room left for most save files.

Game: Doraemon - Nobita's Dorabian Night. Got pretty far in and than got curious about how saving would work ? haha probably lost all the saves oh well. perhaps it autosaved ?

Also what is the suspend function intended for ? while hold select than press run while in a game it will return to the start bios menu ?

Is there a program we can run on it to test the integrity of all it's functions to confirm it doesn't have any faulty parts such as laser etc. we recently took some %99 alcohol to clean the lens and put white silicon grease on the cd rails and plastic gears. It seems to have a loose controller port. have to make sure the controller is plugged in really snug or it will easily glitch out on the controls at times not recognizing certain buttons when pressed .

I don't think Dorabian Night saves at all.

Select and Run is to soft reset the system.

This is a really really really simple system. Seeing a manual you can't read is probably making you think it's more complex than it really is.

You put the game in and turn it on. If it's a CD game you need to hit Run. Use the Select button on the main screen to access data manager. The options are delete one thing or delete everything.

I think that's about it.

There's no internal diagnostic routine, although providing a full memory format (I think it holds a whopping 2k of RAM) might be a good idea.

In general it was the wild west of game saves.  This might be the first system with an integrated save capacity?  At any rate, RPGs will usually try to take up their space when you first boot and warn you if there's no room.  This can be confusing if you don't read Japanese.  Only a handful of cart games will save to the memory, as only the Duo had the built-in save capacity and other models didn't have it.  Cart games that offer this feature (Neutopia, Dragon's Curse, etc.) will also offer a password.  CD games will usually auto-reserve the space when booted (or on first save attempt), but no one established a policy for how to do it.

All CD systems can save and there are maybe more HuCARDs with the ability to save than you might think. Japanese releases have a logo for it, I don't know if US games do. I'm sure there is a tread asking about it that contains links to other threads with full lists but I'm not going to waste time not finding it.

There's probably two dozen US hueys that save, though it's often nothing but high scores.  Assuming a similar percentage of save capable JP games, that's ~75 titles.

Oh good distinction:  all CD systems have built-in save memory, but not all consoles have it.  I wasn't aware of how many Hueys had the capability built-in.  I probably own several and didn't realize it!
