Gekisha Boy
« on: October 28, 2016, 11:40:11 PM »
I gave this game a try after discovering it has a translation patch and it's quite a bit of fun with quirky humor and a unique gameplay mechanic of needing to take pictures while avoiding falling underwear, rolling skateboards and bouncing dodgeballs.

What do you think of the game?

It's definitely a fun game. The intro is pretty tragic considering the tone of the game. Difficulty ramps up a lot especially at the art museum level. Where else can you nab photos of Spider-Man climbing on a wall that says "f*ck"?

My personal pet peeve is that authorities who act knowledgeable about the system, like retro-gamer or racket boy, always name drop Gekisha Boy as one of the best and most "unknown" imports. It's just a decent game with a quirky premise that most people on the forum have tried at least once. I think a similar example would be Blast Corps on the n64, though n64 didn't have as many games as our plucky pce.

It's totally fun and keeps you on your toes, despite the goofy, juvenile aesthetics.

Personally, I like all the 80's pop culture references, but I wonder if some folks miss some of it?

You don't mind replaying this game because there are so many little details crammed into any given screen...it's nice to know that you *must* replay it to savor all the fleeting events...which, by the way, creates a real sense of "urgency" (later in the game, you really don't have much leeway if you miss things...it is a frenetic, but still *fun* sense of urgency...I think it is well done).

I have a soft-spot for quirky games. This game really is a decently-executed game based on a refreshing mechanic/concept.

LOVE THOSE FRONT PAGES!

I wish there was an extra "challenge mode" (one-off side-missions) that would randomly throw out stuff and you had to identify a "theme" to photograph... it could be minor...like, you have to take photos of "insects only"... you would try to beat your own time, but it was one stage with random stuff to keep the game "fresh" for folks who grew tired of the main, scripted game.

:)

Though it gets tough later on, it's good, slightly dirty fun.  It's unfortunate that it's so pricey, but I guess that's why I have a flashcart.

I believe it's one that lives up to the hype, despite a punishing difficulty spike right around the underwater level.  It's also an excellent intro to an "outsider" to the PC Engine because it is accessible with easy-to-grasp mechanics and a lot of discoverability.

That and I need to know what Mr. Pumpkin errrr J. Jonah Jameson needs pictures of with the translation.

I love this game for its bizarre presentation and quirky humor. In an ideal world Hudson would still be Hudson and this would have been remade on Wii U. Would have been perfect.

There's a very...familiar clone on the GBA with Spongebob Squarepants that was released in the US.  Nicktoons Freeze Frame Frenzy:

And it was re-released for PS1 and a sequel made for PS2.

Gekisha Boy is an Irem game.

Unfortunately they are barely active these days.

Oh right!  How do they play?
